Just bought this, was pretty much ready to roll, freshly built and never used.

Been inspecting it and took out the camshaft and had a look at the crankshaft.

Am i correct in thinking an unmarked cam is standard 1275 profile? Going to get hold of an MG metro cam anyway i think so it wont be going back in.
My crankshaft looks like this? is this somebodies crude attempt at balancing or does this look like its been done properly?

Cheers.

Looks normal to me.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

No idea as to what car this came out of, no engine number either, although that doesnt mean much either in most instances.
When i recently helped a mate strip down his 998 it never had any balancing marks on the crank like this one has.

Camshaft is bog standard as far as i can tell, no id marks or grooves on it. So, if anybody needs one and it looks in vgc to me, gimme a shout.

Err, there are three raised rings as clear as day for all to see!

I can't tell you what they refer to, but someone will know.

its an SPI cam, ( which is a std 1275 profile)

the 731 would be maked the same but would be pin drive,

also there was an MG cam that had the marks between lobes 3&4 rather than 1&2

Have a look at the ml motorsport link to the article ac dodd wrote, seems pretty accurate to me but the cam that matches mine seems a bit hazy, he seems to think its possibly an early mg metro cam or something?

Also to clarify my 3 rings are between 3&4

My mistake, sorry Carl,

Ok, this is an early MG metro cam, 252in/252ex degrees the later MG cam is 252/268,

Will be a good cam for turboing

no probs,

oh and for comparison the std 1275 & turbo cam is 230/252, so you on is a fair bit hotter

Measure the lobe lift with a pair of digital calipers. place the calipers accurately round the base circle of the lobe then zero the reading, now rotate the cam, thus opening up the calipers. You can now read the lobe lift straight off the caliper. If it reads 0.263" it is likely an MG cam.

The ML Motorsport link is pretty acurate.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Another daft question, the transfer case ive been given is a 998 one (no breather drilled/tapped) Is it easier to get another transfer case or drill it out myself and tap the holes? Other than that there isnt any difference is there?

Also, does it make much difference to anything drilling the bellhousing? or am i best just leaving it be? Cheers.
