this picture has amazed me!




How the hell do you get your engine painted aswell as that, mine always flakes no matter how clean and degreased i get it, and thats with the expensive halfrauds engine paint!

Also the silver bits like the thermostat housing are really shiney, are they new or are they old ones that you have just polished for ages???

I want my engine to look like this!

looks like the block and head have been acid dipped given the cleanliness around the plug holes and various bosses...

If you do this, decent paint WILL stick - assuming you wash off all chemicals with acetone, celly thinners or something similar of course!

'stat housing is just polished. My dashpot and stat has a similar shine... Lots of elbow grease and AutoSol metal polish!

Nothing I hate more than silver dahspot covers! Get it polished you lazy turd!

Mine always sticks, used hammerite last time. first it went soft but it had only been on about 12hrs. after that it went rock solid and stayed there all the time the engine was in.

i do love the look of that rocker cover, i thought powder coted when i saw it aswell, is this megga expensive i see the clutch cover is done like that as well and looks great.

The paint on my head/block always used to bubble/flake. I found it was moisture in the block from cleaning it.
The moisture would try to escape when the engine was run and became hot. I found heating the block and heat gently with a blowtorch would remove this, then paint your engine.

for donkys years i have been painting engine blocks with NORMAL household paint dulux...

jelly paint seems to work, flow better

i clean the block thoroughly and apply a thin coat,

let this dry for 24 hrs say in the summer time and in winter 48hrs then apply a further light coat

hey presto DONE!

as long as the blockand all parts have been cleaned properly this method works DAM FINE!

its resistant to OIL,HEAT and thats all whats under the bonet!

when you paint your household radiators,
it stands that heat OK and these get to simlar temps to engine blocks

I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS!

as long as its two light coats and drying time between

why? pay for expensive so called engine paints which you
DONT need

OR HAVE i LET THE CAT OUT OF THE BAG!

with some so called Professional Engine building companys,Builders?

My enigine look almost identical, except the rocker cover is different and a vernier cam belt drive!

I have used normal hammerite before seemed to work just as well as any other so called engine paint or High temp paint.

i think benross has hit the nail on the head there

how od i clean it properly? so far i have used petrol ina spray bottle and it has got verry thick grease off but its still got the old paint on wich is in suprising good condition for 15 year old motor but its just not red enough for me lol or should i just paint over the paint thats left?

Petrol leaves a residue when it evaporates. You need to get some of that degreaser that sprayers use before the first coat to get rid of greases and the like...

Or acetone also works...

Best thing though is plug ALL the holes, and get a wire brush attachment on your drill to remove anything that might fall off - ie surface rust/loose paint.

Then use the degreaser wipe

Then paint (or put in the oven like phil does then paint)

wot i did with my motor was when it was in bits i used a wire brush grindign wheel in a grinder (of course!!) and it went back to bare metal before i repainted it in a nice shade of blue.

mmm acetone, i was cleaning some stuff in the garage with it the other night and i came in as high as a kite

the owner would be gutted if sprung an oil leak or the thing didnt work when built it up...

looks nice! how to get that done? i will need my engine rebuilt and cleaned up...prob not tweak with out as just started so run it standard for a while til get used to it....

Thats the best type of discount I think

Hammerite is my choice, used it on a number of different A series engines and its never come off and lasted well.

yeah hammertite is good if you give it cure time, if not, just dont touch your engine first time it gets hot then leave it to cool. Seems to bake it on well.

having said that!

the best paint is epoxi 2 pack brushed on, available from most auto paint dealers

if you dont want to spray it and play hell with your lungs

brush it on
only mix what you need for the job at hand and 1/2 litre with hardner goes a long way...........;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;.......

no thinners reqd.

two coats would give an EXCELLENT finish
thats if you are after the ultimate dogs nuts job!

but the old dulux i have used for years still does the trick as described above..........

just a thought

most (all?) degreasers leaves a residue BTW...

You need to find some cellulose thinners to finish it off with.

even better get some pannel wipe its alcohol bassed and dries in seconds so much still left on even after the thinners has evaporated

here is my engine, washed down with thinners, then used normal car spray paint on


I'll let you know if it all ends up on the floor in a few weeks!
