Ok then the saga goes on*frown*, Right I have just been out in the car and as I was driving the car lost oil pressure and cut out! So when I went to restart it I had No spark and No oil pressure on the key but had a bit of smoke form the exhaust (that has never happened before). It is not leaking at all.

I have give up now as I am off down the pub as it’s been a Long day at work.

Any ideas???

Hmm this is a strange one? You had a plug out?

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Hum...

pop the oil filler off and check the rockers still move when you spin it over.

Does the oil pressure gauge have a capillary to the gauge, or an electric sender? If it is an electric sender could you have lost a common feed to the ignition and the gauge?

I see this would show it the timing chain if broke, could/would it snap then?

That is going to be fun timing it in, in the car if it is that.

it may be nice and cheep to fix if it is chain.

Easy to find out. Take the oil filler cap off, take the plugs out, jack one front wheel up, stick it first gear and turn the wheel while watching the rockers. 10 minute job at the most. At least it will put your mind at rest as to whether the engines catastrophic or not

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Right then I went out today to do some fault finding. I checked I had spark and rocker movement, and spent another 30 mins pissing about looking at it. I then had a brain wave and checked the fuelling and guess what! the tank was empty but the gauge was still saying 1/4 tank so I think the sender is f***ed. So I filled it up and its running nicely again so panic over.

I'm pretty sure we've all done that. I have. Spent 20 minutes tearing my hair out wondering why the car stopped and wouldn't then go.

I ran out of fuel in my old Schitroen Xrara, my own fault, drove straight past the service station, but, I was on my way back there since I knew I was running on vapour. The engine died right at the end of the A500/M6 j15, right on the roundabout. My own fault. However, no fucker stopped to help me push the car out of the way, only shouted abuse about what a dick I was for causing the very large tail back at rush hour. Anyway. 2 weeks later driving in the outside lane on the M6 North, the engine dies just as I was approaching J20/ M56 (6 miles from home), I managed to coast through the inside two lanes with the hazards on full blink. Fuel gauge siad 1/4 tank. Refused to start. AA man added 5 litres of derv and hey presto it starts. Knowing for sure I had 1/4 tank left, the AA man followed me to the service station where I refilled his jerry and I filled the tank. Yep, I only managed to get 3/4 of a tank in there. The fuel sender was faulty, and was shutting down the pump, thinking it was going to run dry.

I was really made to feel like a dick when the boss got wind that I had the AA out twice for running out of fuel.

don't know why I am telling you this, only perhaps to make you realise that shit happens either by our own doing or by parts that fail to show the real situation. D

I found out that the estimated miles to go in my BMW is as accurate as you would expect ze germans to be. Got to 0 and stopped 100 yards later. Luckily 5 feet from the fuel pump in a garage.

Great news I would rather be a dick than have to rebuild the engine.
