electronic oil pressure gauge wiring. - update 24/09/11

I've got an autogauge electronic oil pressure gauge and I'm having trouble wiring it up correctly, there are 6 wires, 3 short ones; red, black and orange, these are obviously for the backlight for the gauge then I have 3 longer ones, green, black and another red. The instructions are very vague and if I must say very poor, I know the green and black go to the sender and I know which way around they go as its marked wk for ground and G for green, but what's the other red wire for? I cannot seem to get a genuine reading, the only thing I have not tried, which is earthing out on the sandwich plate which is what wintersurferuk had to do as he had a similar problem, but does anybody know where the longer red wire goes?

I only got an autogauge one because I like them all to match and I already have an autogauge boost gauge, if I do not get one with them I may well go all out and get 3more aem gauges

Any help is appreciated.

3 short
red +12v
black ground
orange lights

3 long ones
red +12v
black sender ground
green to sender signal

thats how mine are but i dont have an orange

There's always one clever cloggs Yeah the orange is for the dimmer, I won't be using that, I don't understand why there are 2 red ythough, can they jusy be joined together then and both go to a spade on the fusebox?

Tried wiring it as above with no luck, still reading 0psi? I'm stuck as I cannot think of any other way it can be wired?

ive got some auto gauge wiring instructions here but it shows different colours than you have, but of the 3 wires it only shows 1 to the sender, 1 to the ignition live and 1 to engine earth point.
i dont even think autogauge know how to wire up there own gauge's. lol
it shows the sender as self earthing at the mounting point to the block.

ive just wired mine the other day & put the 12v on a switch when i turned it on gauge went straight to 100psi so i swaped the earth & sender wires over on the back of the gauge & it doesnt read 100psi any more but as in the middle of a few things cant actualy start car but think it will be ok i wired 12v to a switch one wire to the sender & the other to earth (mine didnt have any wires out the back for that part only the back light) hope this helps the sender should already be earthed through the engine but if not just earth it to a good point

just a thought, i have been trying to earth off the sandwich plate, but since its ally it wont earth, could this be why the sender is not earthing itsself hence not working?

yes, winter surfer had the same issure recently, put an earth to the block and hey presto.

I still have not sorted this, I tried earthing the sender to the block and no different, i must of tried every wiring combination possible and still nothing? Could be faulty gauge or sender?

Is it the sandwich plate that needs earthing or the actual sender body?

What ever lump of metal the sender goes, needs to be earthed. :)

but if it's bolted to the engine, then it is earthed through the engine

It's bolted into a sandwich plate, I just need to solder or weld some wire onto a washer put inbetween the sender and sandwich plate.

Why? The sandwhich plate is bolted to the engine and the engine is earthed to the car body. It already has a path to earth.

Who knows then, I know wintersurfer had a problem with it not earthing very well, I think I've tried every wiring combination, just not having it, maybe ny gauge/sender is faulty. Lol

the sanwich plates are usually annodised, the anodise layer is a rather good insulator, somtimes washers etc dont bite through the anno layer.

Also any gaskets will have an effect

I'll try a washer invetween the sender and sandwich plate, with a soldered wire going to the block. See if that makes a difference.
