We are laser cutting some 8mm 5083 Aluminium next week at work. Is there everything you need that I might be able to sneak in? Normal beer tokens apply *wink*

Basic shape with dimensions will do. I'll re-draw it and send back to confirm.

Oooooh! Jason. I've got a high torque starter motor that has never fitted properly.

If I had a slightly modified end plate it could be made to work.

What sort of drawing do you need? I can put together an accurate PDF drawing if that's any good?

In the 13's at last!.. Just

Ha, yeah I suppose it would *happy*

But you could drill and tap an ally one and make a custom oil drain for a Turbo?

8mm to 12.5mm, are you still pissed from the weekend? Doubt we cut that thick to be honest.
10mm stainless is the thickest so far we have done. Takes alot more grunt to cut ally than steel. I think our limit for steel is about 20mm.

Sorry, saw the thread and posted before looking.

It might be easier to butcher the one I've got as it has a milled bit on the back too.

If the machine says it'll do 12.5mm and you have never done any yet, I'd like to see how you get on *happy*

The bloke I use laughed at me when I asked, even though they advertise the fact. That said, they have replaced the mirrors recently and the performance has improved somewhat.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Don't know what our limit is for Aluminium and I can only get things cut from offcuts. 8mm Ally, 10mm steel/stainless steel is the thickest we've cut so far.
For 12.5, I was going to suggest 1 off 8mm, 1 off 3mm and 1 off 1.5mm plates and make the thickness up that way *happy*

A friend cut some stuff for me with a waterjet. Thickest so far is 25mm aluminium. Pretty damn amazing really !!

speed didn't kill me, but taxation probably will

That was the recomendation I had too. For ally and copper, use water jet.

The problem with aluminium and especially copper is that it reflects alot of the energy back at the mirrors. Consider that the mirrors themselves are made from copper, you can easily see why cutting copper is a problem with a laser *hehe!*

Too right! We were advised not to cut copper. Even ally we make sure its cut with someone there. Been known to catch the bellow etc alight!

What would happen if the material to be cut was polished to a mirror finish ?

Would the laser reflect off and cut itself ? lol
