if it's not adjustable then you need to use ofset woodruff keys to adjust, just like a chain. On 15th May, 2009 TurboDave said:

From what I have read in the past, people claim more power due to "more consistent cam timing with less variation due to chain tension".

You can measure the frictional losses!

Run a belt for a few years now. I have replaced the belt yearly, but they always look like new when removed anyway.

I have found the belt drive kits from Minispares to be very good. It is cheap and easy to change a cam belt even with the engine in situ.

Agree with that Ben! It's the one part I use plenty of gasket goop - but it still leaked!

As far as power loss goes i feel with one very large oil seal around the cam pulley causing slight fricton power loss could be more than a normal duplex setup. With the vernier facility you get get the timing spot on and is relatively easy to change to the desired. Sounds like something JF would say!

I eventually figured out Is there anything you haven’t figured out yet Dave
I’ve ran belts for around 15 or so years and never had an issue but I would say change it every chance you get, I've never seen any bad wear on the ones removed though. And I’m sure if they can measure the distance to planets we've never visited then the HP loss/gain from running a belt over chain shouldn't be beyond the capability of man. How about if you took the belt drive and mounted it on a motoring rig with frictionless ceramic bearings and measured the amount of reactive torque from the motor when running the belt or chain at a given RPM, this would calculate out to friction HP in my book and has in the past on engine motoring rigs. This method also comes in handy for measuring the engines pumping losses at different throttle angles and peak motoring cylinder pressures. Just a thought. Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe. |

OK OK, of course in THEORY you could measure the difference. But what I was getting at was adding the belt drive kit to an engine, how would you then be able to measure any power increase? And be able to attribute it to the friction difference rather than slightly different timing, or fuel, or air pressure, or inaccuracies in the dyno you use etc etc........
