Large valve head youd need an all steel bottom end and preferably a Dog box

They wont let an engine with more than 150bhp out there workshop without a steel crank. Big valve head is used with more than 150bhp application.

Thats for a KAD built engine if you brought the head and built it yourself you could do whatever youd like. Not advisable though.

Standard worked crank here too with no problems. Sounds like a bit of a money making scheme. *oh well*

Mines 7500rpm with 149bhp and im on a std crank on the limit. Some N/A sprint cars with KAD engines rev to over 9K.

although (as we all know) std stuff can survive at 9k+ from Kads point of view they probably cant afford a dodgy crank slipping through so use "new" stuff on a full house build.

I believe (like myself) the majority of people on these mini forums are using standard components (maybe heavilly worked) and serviving very well. I know from dealings with top end firms like Swiftune that they build their reputation on "Reliability, Reliability, Reliability" ! And Swifty has quoted to me 1 component failure is 1 too many, so he always recomends the best. I'm sure it's the same for Kad as the majority of these engines are used in very high levels of motorsport which carry, very high levels of stress / fatigue. Of course this is also a good route to making even more money, I personally can see were they're coming from, even if I don't taotally agree.

Yep, trot out the old "only the best will do" mantra to gentlemen racers with £££s who turn up in Astons to chat about the mini build. Great business and who can blame them! I'd be doing the same if I could keep a straight face while doing it.

Have to admit, I can see their point of view. But then....can they prove reliability with a steel crank with a 3rd party building it?

Why does no one do a forged steel crank anymore? surely must cost less in machining to justify the extra cost in forging and strength? There are still a few forgers in Shefield ( and no I don't mean the criminal type)

There is some people still doing them, billet cranks seem to have become more popular now too.
