So then, am thinking about changing my road car for something with some more go. At the moment I've got a Citroen Xsara VTS, 170bhp and it handles quite well, some entertainment to be had from torsion bar rear suspension and lift off oversteer.

But had it a while now and I'm getting bored with it, so after something else.

Criteria- Want something either RWD or 4WD. Needs to be quicker than what I have (about 8 secs 0-60). I have got about 5k to spend.

So any ideas? I have got one idea in my head so far but I'll be interested to see what people suggest......

<Edit> PS I am not keen on Japanese stuff.....

I say this every time someone wants performance on a budget, I know your not keen on Jap, but a late 200sx would be great. 200bhp, RWD, LSD, Turbo. Plus all the extras like air con, leather, CD. Handling is fantastic and because they looka bit boring they are cheep as a chip. I replaced mine with an Elise a couple of years ago, but still miss it.

But if you want non jap what about something stupid like a Jag XJR......

455bhp per ton
12 sec 1/4 mile road legal mini

Sunny Bridgend, South Wales

all depends what your budget is, but IMO you can't beat an bmw m3, RWD 330bhp and you can pick a 96 model up for around 5k

If YOU want a 'cossie' or a 'cav turbo' why not just buy one?
Can't see that Tom Fenton as previous registered keeper on the V5 will increase the value that much...

Hmm well some good suggestions. I can see peoples point behind 200sx Nissans, but there are a few too many trev'd up ones about for my liking. The same goes for early Imprezas, an awful lot of idiots have them now. Also I owned a Legacy Turbo for a bit a few years ago so after something more different. I had thought about a Sierra, its just they are getting a bit long in the tooth now, also a lot have been nicked or fucked about with. My mates Dad has a 4x4 Sapphire he has owned from new so I would be tempted if that ever came for sale.
I would love either a Lancia Integrale or an Audi Quattro ur, but the Lancias are too fragile, and the Quattros far too much money for a good one. Also my old man has a late ur quattro 20v so no point me getting one, although he never lets me use it.....
Porsche 944- I have 2 mates that have got them, one has a turbo the other a NA one. The turbo is quick but has been problematic, the NA one not that quick really, the Xsara is quicker.
Seat 20V Turbo-OK idea but over budget I think, also the ones I could afford are only 170 (?)bhp. Fiat coupe, drove a 2.0L 16v one, the suspension only just coped with 150bhp so I dread to think what the turbo is like? Maybe I should try a turbo before writing that idea off. Although it fails on being FWD, as does the Seat.
So what are my thoughts on this then?

Well, trailing at the moment in third spot is a Peugeot 406 Coupe V6. Fails on most counts but I think it is a lovely looking car.

In second spot is a Skoda (yes really!) Octavia vRS. 4wd, and 250bhp+ achievable with a rechip.

But the leader as I am thinking at the moment?

An E34 shape BMW M5

3.6 315bhp, all the toys, 0-60 in 5.9 secs, and Evo magazine have raved about them..........

So b12 and Jimster were the closest!

Will see, still weighing it all up in my mind.
