Are you intending to rebuild it to a standard spec?

What power are you after as this will have a significant affect on what needs replacement/uprating.

for a standard rebuild including gearbox if you do it yourself I imagine you could do it for £1500 with new pistons, reground crank new gearbox cross pin diff etc. which should see a reliable 120bhp.

if the engine is in good condition and only needs bearings, rings and a gearbox probably a lot less.

If the engine is in bad condition do u think it would be worth buying another one.
I'm not to good with the engines so wouldn't be doing it my self

Hi Ash1275, Im in mansfield, I can offer to help you strip and access what you need. It could cost you anywhere from £500 for a very basic rebuild to around £5000 if you are after big reliable power.

well if you got 4k lying round then there is a very nice spec unit in the for sale section at the moment.

As long as you engine is not totally fucked your better off rebuilding it unless you can really vouch for the unit you are buying. With a fesh rebuild it is not worn and has not been run with an incorrect setup (ignition/fuel) possibly causing damage.

Do you have a spec or budget you want to aim for, what is it intended for? Road use, track use? Drag etc etc?

It will be used for the road.
I'm not sure on a budget would like cheap but good if that was possible

I'd strip down what you've got first and see what you've got to play with as this will have a significant impact on any build.

You could build a budget engine with pretty stock parts as I have but i was lucky my pistons and block were good to be re-used (only needed rings) and a cheap standard crank. Yes, you could go for a re-bore and new shiney pistons with the price tag to match

As for a cam, if money is tight, you could use a s/h MG n/a cam to good effect. Many use the avonbar turbo cams (forget the number at the moment).

Head; again this will all depend on how good the head is to start with but you could start off with simply opening up the chambers to reduce the compression. There are a couple of guys on the forum that have been modifying these to good effect; have a look about and your find out who to talk to.

Ignition; consider megajolt if you can but plenty will still be using the original set-up.

the options are so varied and everyone has a differing opnion of what they consider good for use on the road etc, I'd do some research on the forum and get some ideas on what you really want.

I have run the numbers a few times and the best route you could go down is to buy an engine kit from Mini speed.

Check out the spec of the parts included and then phone round and see home much it will cost to put it all together

Own the day

I would say from experience that it's well worth teaching yourself the basics, reading as much as possible, then just getting stuck in and do it yourself.

Out of everything I've done with my car, building the engine was the most enjoyable and rewarding experience.

You may not have already noticed, but a lot of users of this forum don't react well to "txtspk".

That is because most of us use a PC and have a querty keyboard and know how to use it. Those who use mobiles etc. generally take the time to spell and do grammar properly for the benefit of the majority.

Back to your original question, if you don't have the skills (or don't want to learn them) then you are going to pay a significant premium for someone else to do it for you and, unless they are well respected, you might end up with something worth less than you started with.
