So we're very keen on getting a dog, obviously at work some of the time so a puppy is not an option for us. So instead we have been looking at rescue dogs, as they can be older, and so have calmed down a bit hopefully.

Has anyone any experience of adopting a rescue dog? My dad has a rescue GSD and he is great, we are also looking at GSD as I like the look of the dog but more so they are intelligent.

we got a rescue dog when we lived in scotland. Was a lurcher cross with something else. Would never harm a fly! We live on a farm, so he was left on his own quite alot, and he would just sleep. Never had any trouble with him really, except taking him in the car.

We have 2 rescues. Both are great at home. However one was a stray and is a pain in the arse out on walks. We need to keep an eye on him all the time or he tends to just wonder off!

The other wa a rescue from a gypsy site. We dont konw any more than that. When we went to see him they were funny with us as we already had a dog "he's not good with other dogs" we were told but we persuaded them to take them both out in the pen for a familiarisation walk. They were both fine . And following a home visit he came home. We weren't ready for his first outing though....

We live very close to a large dog park and we were out with him off the lead - a long came 2 black huskies... he tore accross 2 fields and started to rip them to shreds! We couldn't beleive it. He must have been a fight or bait dog or something. Still to this day (3 years later) we have to be careful with a few types of dog.

Just be careful when you choose a dog, mke sure there are no underlying issues - seperation problems etc I took one that tore my house to peices when i left him for the first time - He ate 12 toilet rolls, spread fish food accross the lounge, tore the cusions off the sofas, everyting on the kitchen worktops ended up on the kitchen floor, and he took a shit on the landing!!

Look for one that has already had an owner that has passed away. Rescue dogs are great but it needs to be the right one.

First 18 months was hard work as the previous owner was a wanker and i had to re-train

If i got another rescue (and i would if the boss let me) i would go to a specific breed rescue or trust and put my name down, in my opinion specific breed rescue takes in more dogs from broken homes emergration and berivment so your less likely to get a dog with social issues and i wopuld avoid a dog with social issues as i feel any thing else can be sorted with training

How is Oscar these days? I kno he had problems with his eye site a while back.

My dog came from the RCPCA at Bawtry 6 years ago. He's great. I was very lucky to choose a dog that was OK and about as chilled out as you could get. He's pretty fooked now though, so not sure how long he'll be around for...

Lisa had a rescue dog before that, got it because she felt sorry for it. It was stupidest dog I ever met. Absolutely destroyed her mums house. That one was pushed on her, but I'm guessing you will have a stronger mind than her. I made her take it back in the end as she couldn't offer it the care it needed.

The only thing with the RSCA is they don't like you to leave the dog for more than about 4 hours at a time, so might be a bit funny if you and Lisa work full time. In my old job, I just came home at lunch times and they where happy about that.

Just bear in mind a dog is a huge expensive commitment and they do take over your life to an extent (for example, Lisa has to book her shifts around me going to Avon etc so that somebody is here for Lewis.).

Go for it- Yeah its risky getting a dog from a rescue home, but i also think the dogs from rescue homes can be more loving, after trust issues have subsided etc.
It will most likely need some training, But so would any dog from anywhere.
Oh and if you like your garden avoid hunting dogs like jack russels etc. They will try to dig everywhere they can lol.

We have always had rescue dogs. All been lurcher types. Currently have a chocolate greyhound X called Taz (lives with my parents) he was born in the kennels his mum was rescued when she was pregnant. Someone "rescued" him then took him back a few weeks later then we had him.

I really want to rescue a greyhound but work too long hours so until I have another job I wont have one. Very loyal, quiet dogs and only want one walk a day!

We had one from rspca quite a few years ago, she's getting on a bit now, shes a german shepherd/husky cross, beautiful looking dog.
They told us she didn't like other dogs, or children according to previous owners who didn't want her anymore.
Okay she isn't fond of cats like all are, and she has a moan at most dogs, but we had a staffy pup for a while and she was okay with that, and shes ever so gentle with babies & children. She just tends to go on the raid when were out sometimes after any food and sometimes soap :S lmao.

Ive got a rescue dog, she's a boxer x staffy, we had her when she was 5 from the dogs home, she'd been pupped to death, she's 13 now her teets still sagg. We often get dirty looks when weere out as people presume weve done it to her, there's a problem with un wanted staffy's around here, if you go up to the local dogs home its at least 60 % staffs. They are brilliant dogs but once the idiots have had them for a few years to look 'cool' they are sent for re homing and with the stigma attached to the breed, alot still need homes.

We've been twice now to see a 6/7 yr old German Shepherd bitch. We are going again tomorrow to get to know her. She seems pretty well behaved, a bit exciteable at the moment when she is let out of her kennel but soon calms down. We will carry on getting to know her before we decide anything.
Sadly Staffys are in the pounds around here a lot for similar reasons through no fault of their own. Probably wrongly this stigma puts me off them a bit. Plus I like the Shepherds, a good mate and my Dad both have them.

We had a 5/6 year old German Shepard bitch about 15 years ago from a rescue home. Rescue home said it was a cross but our Vet said it wasn't so charged us a fortune.
Very loving dog once she had settled in and forgot about her past.
Unfortunately also very expensive (Vets/food/etc) and only survived about 5 years before she had to be put down.

Cats are so much simpler :)

Don't worry Rod, we are not expecting her to live forever. We have previously had a cat who had to be put down in I'll health so I'm under no illusions about how attached you get, and how much it can cost. But as much as I loved my cat, you cannot beat the affection and companionship of a dog.

make sure you take a good look at the GSD back legs and hip have a bit of a play with it and a feel round that area and see what reaction you get, they suffer from hip displacia and bad back legs if the dog reacts badly to a good fondle then you may be in for some open wallet surgery at the vets later on, i agree about the staffies they a lovely dog but are to easlily trained to be a monster i would only have a staff from a pup

I knew about that, she walks well does not swing her back legs, is very agile for her age, loves to play fetch. I will have a play with her back legs though as you suggest and see how she reacts.

Wolfie is right, my parents have had german shepards for years and sadly they can suffer with their hips.
Ive noticed usually later on in their life though.
I agree Tom you cant beat the affection from a dog, You wont regret taking the shepard home.

Dogs are great, thats why ive got 4, however when the vet bills come they cost a fortune, I think ive spent around 2.5k in the last 2 years. But theyre worth it.

Asha, 6 yr old GSD bitch, sadly has had cancer before, which looks like it is coming back, so we are taking her as a foster dog from the pound, yes there will be some heartache to come, but having got to know her we couldn't just leave her to serve out her time in the kennels. At the moment she is full of beans and lots of character, so we are going to enjoy the good time with her.

That's very nice of you Tom. She does look very good natured too, they're right soppy dogs when they get to a certain age, mines about 13 now, hasn't got long left in her :(

That's fab Tom, how sweet she'll have a really happy life from now on.

I want a dog so much, Alex hates them, we have a cat and a three year old, she's a bit timid for a dog at the moment I think. Literally waiting until she's big enough to push one about a bit or she'll be bottom of the pack!

Lovely looking dog. Bad news about the cancer, but at least she will live her time out in a good home.
