Hi Wondered if you could give me some expert advice.
I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

What is the bush at the engine side of the primary gear like? That one will allow more movement than the front one (which looks OK to me). On 11th Feb, 2015 robert said:

They look OK to me. Is the hole in the transfer case OK? On 11th Feb, 2015 robert said:

Is the bush worn, allowing the primary gear to move about? On 7th Oct, 2010 5haneJ said:

I have been out and measured with a feeler guage between thrust washer and primary.

Measure the C clip and it's thrust do dah. We found the one on the van was worn and allowing the primary gear to move about more than is desirable. I should have a couple of 998 ones throwing round I can measure for you if needs be. On 11th Feb, 2015 robert said:

I need to get another set of feelers as I could only measure with one set which might be getting a false reading.

Ok armed with two sets of feelers I measured the float to be 0.004" so that looks within spec.

I've got a spare a series 1275 transfer housing (extra breather might be useful) if you want and probably 998 a transfer gear or two. On 11th Feb, 2015 robert said:

Thanks Andy, but I cant face stripping the engine. Its been bolted together since about 1969, I have always felt that if I strip it it should be to rebuild as oher wise its not realy worth the hassle? Thanks for the offer, the gear looks ok and I'm nit picking realy.

The transfer case is just sat in a box in the shed if you change your mind at any point. On 11th Feb, 2015 robert said:

I have a new primary gear I could measure the bush/outer diameter if that's any use. I only have a vernier that's accurate to 0.05mm though.

I think an extra breather at this end could be a fix.

sounds plausible. It's only a hand full of bolts and a gasket to change it... On 11th Feb, 2015 robert said:

If you've got the clutch out with the engine in, then the transfer case should be a piece of cake. On 11th Feb, 2015 robert said:

Andy I can't see you getting it past the crank with the subframe in the way. I'm also worried about what it will find behind it. I imaging springs, cogs, ball bearings and magic wizzardry holding it all in the right place. :) I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

Nope, it just lifts away. You'll get it of if you lift that side of the engine as high as possible.

I've measured the new and an old primary and there is no difference with the measuring gear I have. Ideally need a micrometer.
