What do you guys prefer? Pot joint should be a smoother rotation but what does that gain?

I seriously doubt it!

I like pot joints as there are less bolts on them!

I think you could make billit pot joints easyer than a hardy spicer joint but i dont know much about engineering just by look.

I've always used pots but can see the appeal of spicers. No either draining the oil or pulling boots off when removing the engine.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Nice argument but with us, 9 times out of 10 when an engine comes out it needs to be stripped down anyway because we've broken something.

Removing an engine without spiltting pot joints is easy enough with a bit of wiggling.

Yep mole thats how I have always done it. But the alternative to splitting the boot off the joint is popping the pot out of the box.

Sorry thats what I ment, don't want to be getting crap inside the joint so I use that method.

Depends how you get the engine out. I don't use a hoist so the wiggle option is out of the question. Hence, I usually end up splitting the uprights from the top arms and separating the pot joints from the box.

Spicers would be easier, or I could trade in two lads for a hoist :)

EDIT: Also it is bad practise to split pot joints. If you get any crap in there or re-assemble them in a different orientation, than they are not going to work at their best.

I think the majority of people with 200bhp + are running pot joints.

Ive seen twisted splines but not seen a broken pot joint yet?

I belive both the minis that have made over 300bhp use pot joints, there are also thoes bad ass uprated shafts you can get which are like thoes found on the back of a bmw or vws not sure what there called though but there like a mix of pot and hardy

Hardy Spicer assemblies seem to be significantly lighter than pot joints

I seriously doubt it!
