I've finally caught the rat that has been driving me nuts over the last couple of weeks

I've heard scratching, and a box of Weetabix has been munched through along with my Hamster's food

Tonight I went to get out a video from the built in cupboard in the alcove, and got a strong whiff of piss

I stripped the cupboard down so that I could get underneath it to the sub floor

I found plenty of shit and damp piss patches

Previously I had put some insulation under there to stop the drafts from coming in the room, and the rat had been using it as it's bed

I was about to pull out the insulation when I noticed that the rat was still there curled up asleep in the corner

I went straight down the garage to get a spare hamster cage and my thick gloves so that I could grab it

My intention was to grab it, put it in the cage and then release it a few miles from the house, but when I did grab it, it started to struggle and bite, so I had to squeeze it tight so that it didn't get away

Put it in the cage, but a few minutes later it died - I must have squeezed too hard

Even though it had been driving me nuts, it didn't want to kill it, and now I'm feeling sorry for the poor thing

Ive done a bit of ratting in my time and on a serious note, disinfect the area where you think its been.

Rat piss carries some awful things. Like carl says weils disease is nasty. If your feeling bad i wouldnt, you should see them die from rat pellets.... they effectively bleed out over of time. Better off shot in the head or in your case crushed.

They're pests, sod it, kill 'em.
My cousin has pet rats... when domesticated they're really nice; loyal, friendly and bloody smart. But as pests they're just dicks.
A mate and I had to take down an infestation in his shed, a nest with babies and everything, overrun with the fuckers. Safe to say we managed to get rid of them. It was a case of doing what had to be done... would have preferred to have carried out your humane plan of releasing them far away, either way though, you got rid of it which is the right thing to have done.

Yeah rat piss can be serious, a mate of mine spent time in hospital with leptospirosis and nearly died. Agree with above, I've got 8 pet fancy rats and they are awesome pets. That was defiantly a female, trust me there's no mistaking the sex of a rat, males balls are like giant topedo's.

Well I've disinfected inside the cupboard with bleach, so at least the smell has gone

This year sometime I have to rip up the floor boards in the room, so I'll have better clean out and disinfect then

My only worry is that rats are sociable creatures and live in groups, so I'm wondering where the rest of her mates are

I've found where the rat got in, damn broken air brick at the back of the house

Where can I get some cheap fine mesh from

b&q mate ugly, but cheap. If you have to rip up the floor boards check underneath for any other rats because that might have been a perfect nest

You may think you're being kind trying to catch & release it, but the best rat is a dead rat. As already said they carry many foul diseases which can also be left in their droppings & piss. Thoroughly disinfect anywhere it could have been.
I've had to shoot a couple with the airgun that the cat brought in recently, I wouldn't hesitate in killing it. Vermin pure & simple.

Thanks Craigie-B for the link

I intend to disinfect the whole sub floor when the boards are lifted

Got to lift the floor because the cold air from outside travels through the air bricks front and back making the floors downstairs cold
I'm putting in insulation between the joists - hopefully 200mm foam blocks

Looking for the cheapest place to get them now
