I am looking for a top engine steady to go on the thermostat side of the engine. However I don't want the normal type that goes on top of the thermostat. I would like one to connect to the water pump, or around there. I have had a look at all the main suppliers, but can't find what I am looking for. Does this sort of thing exist, or did I dream it? Any pointers in the right direction appreciated.

I could always make something myself if I can't find anything off the shelf.

Cheers

Ben

Hi Ben,

I dont know how much help this is, and i expect that it wouldnt suit what you are after, but DSN do a billet thermostat housing and rose jointed steady to the bulkhead. Im sure that what you are looking for does exist and Im sure i have seen a water pump mounted steady by someone on here but I really cant put my finger on whos car it was featured on. Hope this is of some help.

I got one of these off Simon (madmk1) last year - not sure if it was the minispares one or not; the downside is the bracket suits the blanking cover for the LHD mastercylinders to not much good if youve got a bulkhead box fitted

Avonbar used to do one like that. Not sure if they still do.

Thanks for the links, that is what I was looking for. I knew that the bulkhead box would be an issue.

I think that I might just get a steady of Carl (for the other side) and then make some brackets to o suit.

I'm going to be binning my ultimate engine steady in favour of one of these, I had one turn up on an engine I bought.

they are good, but on both the ones I have the pressed in threaded bush on the bit that bolts to the water pump is spinning, realy they need a dab of mig befor fitting IMO

My thinking is to try and not use the thermostat bolts though as, 1 I don't like the idea and 2 it is a pain if I have to change the head gasket. Hence why I want to attach it to the water pump.

I've been looking for a similar solution, found two suitable answers, first from Gerald Dale (Mondo Sport):

Second from Endaf Owens of Owens Fabrications:

I've gone for the second set, waiting to receive them through the post. I've welded two strengthening plates to the bulkhead too where the brackets will mount.

For every action there is an equal and opposite criticism.

The problem with both those solutions is that they're not really a solution. The bulkhead mounting is not a real issue. It's how to mount to the engine.

Although Gregh's solution is neat, I'm not sure I like that it's only single shear going into the block. It needs extra strength (like the flywheel side where the bolt is supported). That's the clever bracket that dosen't exist!

They both look nice, but where do they bolt to?

As wil says something like the above, but with the rose joint supported at both sides.

I might get something knocked up tomorrow and post a picture.

I made mine:

Difficult to see when fitted but it is just a flat piece of 3mm plate cut to clear the pump and driled with two holes. The car came with the steady bar and a suitable bracket on the crossmember.

I had to thin the head of the bolt to clear the pulley.

I should have a little more space than that as I don't have that breather fitted.

I can see the welder coming out tomorrow.....

Using Gregs idea, it wouldn't be difficult to make up a cranked piece of metal up to support the main load bearing bolt. You could fix it onto the bolt next to the alternator mount.

Yes, any extra support will help.

But thinking about it, gregh's is no good if you have a pulley anyway.

I have made a bracket now and it will be single shear. I could make it not to be single shear, but the bracket is probably not strong enough to justify it.

There will be when it is finished. It is not dissimilar to those already shown attached to the water pump.
