I was discussing getting some FB or Carbon doors with my house mate for the main reason that they wont rust away and will save a bit of weight as well. Only my house mate tells me that as the mini will be regularly used they will probably crack and break through normal use and will eb a waste of time and money?

What experiances have you guys had them? Do you have to take extra care to close them real gently?

I guess a good alternative would be to use aluminium doors but i can only seem to find door skins and the whole frame on mine are shot =/

I don't like the fit on any fibre doors ive seen, so i can't imagine them being very water proof, so unless its a garaged car and not used much for road use i wouldn't bother, especially as you will have to have fixed windows for them too.

If you can get some steel doors you can make them very light anyway, im doing that with mine, all excess cut way like winder mech and then putting aluminium skins on them.

I think when it comes round to mine, il use aluminium skins with Perspex windows. And cut down the insides to further reduce weight.

I had a sit in Jimster's car a few years back. He had f.g. doors on and they where a bit floppy for my liking. I would expect they would be draughty too.

I used carbon skins from weezel in side and out (fookin expensive). I conjuction with poly carb windows and some metal trimming they are light, leak and you can unlock the car by opening the window and sticking your hand through the window. Never need to worry about losing my keys ever again *Clapping*

Don't forget about the safety side of things.

By fitting FG or CF doors, you are taking away a lot of protection so best to have door bars fitted in case of a side on impact.

I did just that the weekend. Recon the door bars were heavier than the weight saved. Oh well, kept me busy for an hour :(

Yes the GRP doors are flimsy, but if you think a standard steel Mini door offers any form of side impact protection whatsoever, I think you are mistaken. The late MPI door with side impact bar are probably the best of a bad bunch.

I drilled masses of holes in the bottom of my door, it's quite thick steel there so it's a fair place to save weight, and helps air out the door/adds drainage. Have a look at the my door in my build thread, I reckon fitting electric windows saves weight over winders and keeps the windows usable.

It does. I have alu skins, electric windows, and plastic windows. loads lighter.

That's what I'm gonna be using except steel skins because they're too good to change. The door I've cut/drilled already feels significantly lighter than a bare door so I'm happy with that :)

I wanted to install electric windows anyway because I thought they were cool *happy* but if there lighter then it should be a good shout.

Thanks for the ideas guys I think ill go aly skin, drill holes in the bottom to help drainage etc and leccy windows.

Apbellamy did you just replace the glass with a sheet of perspex? Does it work okay and does it not get scratched easy going up and down???

Cheers guys!!!

My mate has some fg doors, the fit is great but they're wobbly as fook and I would not want that on a roadgoing car. Especially small sliding windows in the summer, he was driving about at mitp with his door held open to keep himself cool inbetween runs. Might be okay if you had a folding sunroof but that defeats the object of weight saving!

If mine was a weekend toy it'd be worth it, but too much of a pain if it's a daily unfortunately!

There are two types of GRP doors. The ones that nost people by for track/racing cars and those for road cars.

The road car ones are more substantial and may keep water and wind out. I can't remember off hand who makes the heavier doors though. But lighter skins are a better option anyway for a road car.

It's the lack of water resistance and that they open up at the top in anything above 60mph which is the main problem.
