does anyone run their S disk set up with out a servo? just wondering how good it is and how much of an adverse effect it has on braking if any? I will be changing my rear wheel cylinders to the correct S size weather i keep the servo or not. Its an off the pedal servo not a remote one so im looking at making space for a later date.
Thanks Wez

cheers, how much of that is attributed to the 4pots over the standard calipers?

Standard S setup with no servo is reputed to be shite, not from personel experience but i used to compete against a lad who had these and complained about no brakes

I ran s brakes no servo many years ago on my road car. They were equally as good as the 8.4" 2 pot setup, you just had to have a strong right leg. They were also quite sensitive to pads, cheap hard pads equalled crap brakes, but with some 1144 Mintex they were good.

if with a decent set of pads they are no worse than the 8.4's then they will be good enough for me, i never really had any issues with that set up. Maybe its because ive never drove a mini with 4pots so i dont know what im missing. lol

Carbon metallic pads makes it all ok.

On my pickup I've got Mintex pads, and they are exeptionally inferior to the CM pads.

I'll be running a similar setup on my car when i've built it. Unless i find a decent set of 4 pots for a nice price.

So thanks for those answers.

Im running the S brakes and no servo and to be honest ive never had much confidence in them. *oh well*

I'd like to try out some 4 ally pots to compare, as the S setup isn't great IMO.

Ive tried several different pads, green stuff, mintex. The mintex were the best, but the wheels were constantly covered in brake dust and the ALWAYS squeeled no matter what I did.

Thinking back, my car had the standard compensator removed, and an adjustable bias valve in the rear line. This allowed me to get the rear brakes doing something useful, as opposed to doing sod all which is the case normally.

that might have been because the front brakes were not working efficiently to unbalance the car forward, therefore requiring the rear brakes to do more of the work than would normally be the case

*wink*

I've got S discs and no servo on most of my cars - no braking issues at all.

I did have a remote servo on the beige Elf - all that did was make the pedal effort less and fool the Mot tester into pressing it too hard. 3 years in a row it jumped out of the MoT rollers.

Metric is for people who can't do fractions.

Wintersurfer had S brakes with Mintex 1144 pads. It felt ok, but needed effort on the pedal. I only have my servo assisted alloy 4 pots to compare with.

In the 13's at last!.. Just

some people get on with this setup an some dont, generally they work well enough but do need a bit of a stamp, if you go straight from a modern car you might get brown pants untill you get into the mind set of jumping on them a bit.

I have found I can cook S brakes and 1144's on occasion though,

Bringing this back again,

I have the remote servo, and I am finally done with the complete lack of room in the engine bay, and that it makes taking the engine out (again) that much more time consuming.

I forget what pads I'm runnign right now, but know it's not the POS greenstuff that broke up on me - don't think its mintex though...

I tried disconnecting the vac feed before pulling the engine, and it is scary how much force was needed to slow me down - I mean, the pedal was flexing sideways.

I have the grooved discs already, but am in two minds to try after removing the servo) the mintex, or just to go over to the minispares 4-pots (i assume mintex 1144 pads are available for these?

Cheers all.

when i first changed from my metty turbo brakes to S brakes i noticed a big difference. We were driving around some of the passes in Cumbria and i had to ram the pedal into the floor when we were going down the other side.
