The car market appears to be on its arse at the moment but any idea what its like for our slightly more niche motors?

The sad realisation is coming to light that I may need to sell my Mini to fund a house deposit, nartrally after owning the car for nearly 12 years and spending countless hours and £££'s building it I'm not prepared to give it away.

The insurance have it valued at £8000, obviously I've spent a lot more on it, but would I get anything close to the insurance valuation if I was to sell it?

Its a complete car so not a project, just got a 12 month MOT ticket on it, 1500 mile 1380cc Turbo, straight cut box, coilovers, cage, race fuel cell, flip front, harnesses, grands worth of dash gauges, the works basically. 165bhp but its now got some miles on it ready to be tuned up a bit more, should see 180 without a struggle.

I got good money for mine, but it went to holland, Its only ever going to be worth what someone wants to pay for it. haven't seen many turbo minis sell for over £5000 in recent times.

Be warned, get an agreed value on your car to optimise it's value. I know this at a slight tangent but anyone looking to seek a value for your car will look on sites like piston heads. If yours is little more unique in spec an agreed valuation could go some way to justifying a higher asking price.

Yep I've got a fully agreed valuation from the insurance company of 8k.

I made the mistake last year of not doing that and it turned out that if I'd written off the car I would only get the equivalent cost of a standard mini back. This time I've got it all sorted and agreed down to individual values on most items.

it will go on at a TBC price with offers. technically I could set fire to it and claim 8k on the insurance, but I really would prefer not to set fire to it!

i know its not the cheapest turbo mini out there, not that theres many out there for sale at the mo, and I'm in no immediate rush to sell it. cars are worth what people are willing to pay for them especially when it comes to minis.

i've seen rot boxes go for a few grand, very ropey turbos go for 4k where nothing on the car has been touched other than a metro turbo engine swap. equally i've seen slightly rusty but mot passing 1L go for <£1000 so its anyones guess.

we all know what these things cost, i'll never make money on it, but equally i'm not prepared to give it away. we also know that I could easily make more than 8-9k breaking it but again I really dont want to have to resort to that, I would rather take a lower offer than break it.

The thing about the agreed valuation is that you are saying that you can build this very can for £8k, then asking £9k for it even though you've spent loads more...

My insurance would only agree mine at 4K because I had done most of the work myself, so no receipts showings its actual worth, but if I was to ask someone to build it, it would be 3 times that, so really it has no relevance to its actual worth.

You'd probably be best to leave the agreed valuation part out of the add, as people may think thats what its worth.

apbellamy, as matty says the agreed insurance valuation has no baring on how much it cost to build, theres no way you could build this car for 8k, its just the maximum value the insurance company are prepared to pay out.

matty, there are to trains of thought on including the agreed valuation part, some say leave it out, some say leave it in to prove how much its been valued at. I'm still in 2 minds about it but I might leave that bit in but list it at 8k with offers instead.

I'm impressed by the eating of non food items on offer.

It's ok everyone saying they will eat so and so, what happens if you advertise it for £5k and it sells instantly? you can always drop the price, or take a cheeky offer, the same can't be said if its priced too low

Keep it dont sell it and just work some more, if it means you have to wait and extra 6 months or a year you might as well.

You will regret selling it imo

im with paul, you may as well as lets be realistic your not going to get anywhere near you asking as its just not how the selling of cars works. unless your restoring a mk1 cooper s

there was a 1293 engine on ebay about 4 months ago that went for near 3k with t2 mirage, megajolt, rad, ic basially everything you wanted.

if your desperate sell the engine keep the shell in a safe dry place and wait for a bit till you can afford another engine.

I don't see that there is much of a market for such a car. A 1960s Cooper has nostalgia to prop up the price. The value of this car is in its parts. But second hand parts are typically worth 50% of the new value, to use the new prices to generate a price is folly.

Good luck though.
