Clicking is like ultra tappet click, but only under load.

Id try timing and carb set up, if its running to lean it will over heat loads

to test the thermostat, drop it in a mug of boiling water and see if it opens.

This clicking sounds to me like det. Back the timing off pronto before you fuck your pistons.

in addition to toms comments, timing could be causing the overheating |

Seems to have helped a bit - got it properly timed at a local garage, but had a mega boil over on teh way home :(

The garage I took it too suggested that the carb needle I should change too so I guess it could still be leaning out from that.... |

I had similar symptoms, especially the 'clicking'. Was the head gasket in the end?! This is FORD country, on a quiet day you can hear Vauxhalls rusting. |
