Hey Guys!

I was wondering which part of the cooling system has the hot water and which has the cool water.

Does the bottom hose return the hot water to the rad?

Basically im asking because Im planning to put a T piece in the join between the bottom hose and the longer one that connects to it (goes to the heater I believe) and then return the water from the turbo to this point.

Seems like a silly question but me and my housemate cant agree and I dont want to be dumping hot water in the cool part of the system.

Cheers

Craig

heat rises, therefore the hot coolant comes out of the head and goes into the top of the rad

hot comes in up top

leaves cooler down bottom

would I be able to join the water return to the inlet manifold then join the other side of the inlet manifold to the heater pipe?

yes, but you don't want to heat your inlet manifold up...

Whats the point of cooling your turbo if youre just gonna heat the charge in the manifold again?

I seriously doubt it!

With the air spends in the manifold and its surface area heat transferal will be almost zero i will argue that with a heated manifold the temp rise of the inlet air to be less than 1degree c

i have never looked into wether wall wetting is benefical or not on the Aseries engine but i would guess not as a heated manifold greatly helps in cold weather running
plus surface temps of my inlet manifold are alot higher than coolant temps after a short blast

Take water FROM the bottom hose that normally goes to the heater. That water is as cold as it gets. Then route it ito the top hose. I'd also reccomend having the head heater output open, and plumbed in the top hose.

what I have done so far is:

Drill the bung out of the engine to provide a water feed as previously advised on here:

I was then going to use the standard T piece thats inbetween the cyl head and the heater matrix on the drivers side and return the turbo water to there as it will be hot anyway?

I wouldn't return through the heater into the bottom hose. You will end up with a load of hot water bypassing the radiator. As V says, return into the top hose.

I have one of these rads:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FULL-ALLOY-SUPPE...=item1c1e50c3f7

and as its alloy I couldn't drill and tap it like nala has done above because it would be too thin?

Im using the standard mini thermostat cover, and enless I cut a hole in my top hose and put the pipe going into there is there anywhere else I could put it?

Im not ignoring anything your saying, I just really really dont want to cut a hole in my nice new and shiny silicon hose *happy*

I was thinking of replacing the hose that goes through from the heater tap on the cyl head to the manifold and put my return on there instead? Thats what I meant above, but im guessing the water goes through the matrix then into the bottom hose and re-used?

Bugger :/ thought i had it all worked out

water comes out of the head, through the heater and into the top of the bottom hose.

Could you add a fitting to the back of the thermostat housing?

I make a new top hose with a branch from a standard bottom hose.

just been out and took some pictures of my house mates mini and old bottom hose:

It looks to me like its only really going to fit one way and the spout points toward the grill which is 180 deg the wrong way :/

I was originally going to use a metro thermostat housing however this has a bigger spout and so the mini top hose wont fit on.

So to get things straight, the water comes out of the bottom hose, goes up into the water pump pushed around the engine and then into the cylinder head then to the heater matrix and returned into the bottom hose, but some of it goes up the top hose and into the radiator?

I can get my head around which way the water in the head goes because I get the impression now that it goes both left and right (looking at the head with the bonnet up) to go out the heater tap on the left and up the top hose on the right - but how can it go two ways?

edit: What do you all think to this:
