First mini turbo to get in the 12's & site perv

Herefordshire

I just spotted this:

http://www.racecarsdirect.com/listing/4337...stin_turbo.html

Its rather interesting, as it says it was apparently owned buy 2 Austin employees. I wonder if that is nonsense or if it did provide any development to our cars

Andy Smith and Rob Oldaker were indeed BL/Rover engineers and both have held senior positions in the motor industry (I think Rob might have been MD of Cosworth Engineering at one point). As far as I know the car has been sat in Andy's garage since 1985 - although it was on display it at the MAC Centenary Meeting at Shelsley Walsh in 2001 (I've got some photos somewhere). I was talking to Andy's son at Harewood a few years ago and he said the cat was using it as somewhere to sleep in the garage!

I hope that someone buys it to restore with its A-series engine - it would be great to see the car back on the hills again. The exhaust system would need some work though - last time the car ran unsilenced systems were still allowed...

Clutch arm is to avoid the chassis member. surely?

I think a 16v head, turbo, and over 250bhp would work well.

Current upto 2.0l hillclimb cars need over 400bhp, the current fastest around (with several new records) is Alex Summers in hid DJ Firehawk, using a 1400cc supercharged hayabusa engine.

So you'd need to go some to run this competatively.

That's what I thought. Looks like a nice engineered solution to the problem.

oh yes it's an 1140, that would be in the 1600cc clas (as the ad says).

We the upto 1600cc class is even more competative.

I heard from a friend of Rob that it made nearer 300 bhp at one point, shortly followed by a conrod failure which left a big imprint on the side of the block..........
