no. arch has to cover tread, i got a dig off the traffics when i was running 215 wide tyres for a while as they were a good inch of tread outside the arch.

turbo 16v k-series 11.9@118.9 :)

actually the arch has to cover all the wheel, not just the tread,

hold a straight edgevertically against the wheel and it should touch the arch before the wheel/ tyre at the top.

I think I read on a copper forum there is about a 20mm leeway between legal and illegal. To be fair most of the cops were unaware of the law or could not agree either. I think yours is beyond doubt though

Itll pass an MOT. Im sure theirs nothing in the manual about that. Like everyone above has said its a transport legilation thing. I think its due to kicking up spray / stones etc..

Yeah but you can kick stones and spray up going round a corner, I just haven't found a set of arches that look nice to be honest

i got pulled for this some years back and have posted details on this before but i wanted to double check so i have been searching online and from what i can find we are all correct, but joe is the most correct

For an mot test, it SHOULD pass there is no reason listed to fail it on this.... but it is still at the testers discretion if he deems it un safe or not

even though it is not a fail on an mot it is still not legal what Joe posted is the legal requirement ( or there abouts) it falls in the construction and use section

http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1986/1078/contents/made
scroll down to point 63..

even then it is open to interpretation

The place to look is the type approval manual/SVA manual, its quite clearly stated in there,

theres a bit more to it than what I said, as the wheel need to be covered for x degree's...

essentialy the reasoing behind the rule is, if you drive into a pedestrian at low speed the arch should protect them from the rotating wheel.

that said, if you have a little sticking out your likly to get away with it as only vosa/trafic cops will know the details, certainly its not part of the MOT,

If landrover sell cars with big wheels poking out the arch by atleast and inch then its fine, my old mini ran 1.5" roughly out the arch on the rear never got pulled or flagged up in the mot.

Could always put a little bit of plastic over the top for road and take off for shows ect

I always thought it was tread that had to be covered when looking down? I know lots who run massively stretched tyres and neg. Camber to get around this?
