The turbo gearbox has a bigger bearing on the input shaft to the gearbox - compaired to a std gearbox.

You can either change the bearing... or just use a non-turbo transfer casing with the smaller bearing surface to match the smaller bearing on the shaft!

so alex N/A A+ boxes are the same bearing sizes as the "A" box then?

maybe they found the standard bearing was not strong enough after doing bearing calcs / testing?

OEM's always have reasons for doing stuff!

Either of those options will work.

I have managed to get the bearings off in one piece before now but its tricky and needs bearing seperator plates and drawing tackle to do it.

If I were you then go with the smaller type bearing and a non-turbo end casing and see how you get on.....not an ideal solution, but it will work.

I've mentioned this before, but I bought one from a bearing place for about £8 before..........if you take the old one in they should be able to cross ref the numbers. When I got mine they had an "automotive applications" book that listed the bearing we found as "Input Nose Bearing MG Metro Turbo" so there was no doubting it was the right thing for the job.

I can also have a look to see if I have still got a s/hand bearing in stock at home, I got one off intact and so kept it, don't have the outer race though, you are supposed to use as a matched pair but probably get away with it?

Or in fact give Min-its near Birmingham a ring I am sure Dave there once told me he could source me one if required. Worth a quick phone call.

ha ha ha

they wouldn't use a piddly little bearing like that for a paperweight where I work, most of the bearings we have here require a forklift or a crane to move them about!

But if I catch the bearing rep sometime I will ask him.

i thought they made them bigger so they could make the bigger ones out of chocolate? *happy*

i.e. the A ones were far better material?

Exactly! Also, the A+ has got only two layshaft bearings, Whereas the A ones have got three..

One less bearing= cheaper.

Last time I bought the 'turbo' bearign from BSL - using my company's 60% discount at the time - it was £17. This was half the price of the same thing from minispares, so I wasn't arsed!
