Ive just bought a mini with 998 engine in thats not wired up or anything, I have tried to turn it over by hand and it turns over so far & then stops, anyone know what the problem could be?

I have tried to pull the flywheel off to see if the cluch or something was sticking but one of the threads is knakered to screw the tool into, any ideas how to get it off?

Thanks Matt

Broken timing chain?

A overly long bolt somewhere which fouls on the crank/clutch/flywheel?

In the 13's at last!.. Just

Are you turning it enough to get compression and then not able to turn it further by hand? Maybe try it with the plugs out.

As Andy says, take the plugs out and try it, might just be the compression stopping you from turning it by hand.

Are the con rods in the right way around? If they're in backwards I believe they can foul the block.

has the dizzy been pulled out so the dizzy drive can make a bid for freedom and touch the crank?

could be a stuck valve,

or could be the box

Joe, do you have a photo of your tool?

Does it go to a solid stop with as if something is hitting something else, or does it gradualy get harder to turn then stop?

TurboMike1992 ive already tried that but flywheel has a knakered tread where the tool screws in.

Ill pull the dizzy out & whip the head off at the weekend I think.

Matty it just stops dead at a certain position both directions, could be hitting something

any idea if it was running before you bought it? if it wasn't it could have been put together wrong, maybe the cam timing is completely out?

But the only way of telling will to be to get it apart by the sounds of it

Sounds like corrosion in the cylinder, seen an engine like this before where it was poorly stored. The engine turned easily one way or the other then just stopped.

To get flywheel off without the puller, take off the starter motor then use large drift and a lump hammer strike the flywheel through the starter hole, make sure the drift is sticking beyond the primary case, keep turning the flywheel after two or three hits and don't hit the casing. Alan

PS. you may have to take distributor off as well so you can get a good swing at the flywheel, and the drift needs to be a good substantial/solid one as well, its a bit brutal I know but if its the only way left, Ive done this a few times and its worked for me.. Alan

I'd suggest retapping the knackered puller holes to the next size up before playing whackfuck with a BFH through the starter hole.

Metric is for people who can't do fractions.

My flywheel welded itself to the crank and stripped the threads. It was a 20min job to re-tap the threads to the next size. Will save having to buy a new flywheel at least.

Plenty of heat on the flywheel centre always helps, and leave it under tension over night if needs be. Ive done this a few times and looked at it in the morning and its come off. *happy*

id say to give matts suggestion a go sounds less brutal than whacking the nuts off it but if it comes to it what else is there to do?

some kind of object down the plug hole would do the job
i have been there although when i did it i watched it fall in slow motion haha i had work the next morning with the mini my only transport at the time 7
spent some time fishing with a coat hanger but got it back lesson lent don't take the plugs out and get side tracked..

I agree with the re tapping idea as well, the only time I would use the method I described is as a last resort.. Alan
