Where should I set the rev limit on my new 998?

The key elements:

Hypatechs:

MED ground, lightened, nitrided and balanced crank:

MED lightened, shot peened and balanced rods, ARP bolts:

Is 8k realistic?

Well I'm intrested to know. Hopefully I'm going to aim for 7k without the rods being worked...

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

In the grand scheme of things it is not just the cam but the head efficiency too.

The bottom end componets should easilly take 8k rpm. The life span ultimately depends on the end use. If its a road engine with the occassional track day, then I see no issue, but if its a track car or all out race car, the pistons might be the weak point. Having said that The twins seem to do well with the pistons they run.

I've compensated for that elsewhere :)

Breathing is not an issue according to the model. Just need to have confidence in letting it rev.

Use a crank damper and get the bearing clearancies as tight as you can get to bottom limit. That might be a problem as the crank has already been ground, and probibly to a generic spec of "it'll do"??...

Well my old 998 (+20) regularly saw 8k, with standard bottom end. Eventually it broke the crank after about 30 or 40 thousand miles, plenty of tracks and lots of thrashing around. I just popped a new crank in and its still going. Although now I have detuned it a little going from a 276 cam to an SW5.

I doubt that what you have there, Paul, will be much of a limiting factor.

Engine has damper:

Crank was prepared the same as used by Mini Sevens and checked with plasti-gauge on build. I'm sure MED do not use an "it'll do" attitude for race engine components.

Ben H, Thanks, that's what I needed to hear.

It all depends on the pistons I'd say. The rest should manage 8000easy as per Se7ens.

cool I was reading Des Hamils book who was stating not to use high temp paint, so I will looking for some of thsi stuff. Will have a look in the local Halfords.

I fancy a black engine this time the green is a pain to keep clean...

Come on Paul. *smiley* *smiley*
This shoud be in the "show us yours" section. You know very well where to set the rev limit. You have given this a lot off thoughts, before you started the build.

But nice of you to show us *smiley* Looking forward to see the dyno result

You say that, then why did the 'race' crank I bought from MED, a 1275 bladed, wedged, blanced and nitrided crank, not in balance and had 0.003" bearing clearancies on every journal with a fresh set of VP2 bearings? Maybe the guy at the machine shop had on off day?

I just thought that it was worth a separate discusion.

I set out with a rev limit of 7500rpm as stated in the OP:

http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php?p=vt&tid=383285

However, I've been updating the model with "as built" data and now find that the peak torque has gone up to around 6k and the power curve is still climbing at 7.5k so might as well increase the limit.

Stephen Hawking - "The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge."
