Well if I was to predict another business to fail it would not be B&Q. Last year Focus went, but they had not adapted. B&Q have a good online presence and generally do a good job.

I would be looking at Waterstones. The kindle is taking more and more of their business, plus Amazon. They do have an online presence, but I can see their highstreet shops being cut back.

In all seriousness, I would not be suprised if Wickes go pop, they seem to have been on a steady decline for a few years and the prices are a joke.

I actually asked some friends I was with last weekend if blockbuster was still going as we fired up sky on demand. I was surprised, but clearly right to be skeptical about their future.

There's gonna be sod all left on the high street at this rate. Fair enough out with the weak in with the strong, but it seems so much cheaper to run an online business that even when things recover I don't see demand for high street shops recovering to previous levels.

I've stopped going to my local town center unless necessary due to stupid parking charges.

I can see it being quite strange going into the high street in 5-10 years. Lots of boarded up shops!

Rotherham town centre is already like that. It's improved a bit recently, but still plenty of closed shops. Bit of a shame really as it's a nice little town centre.

I've got to say, monk Bretton village pubs have really seen a good pickup in buisness, so much so that you couldn't get in some of them at christmas and new year, which I havent seen in a fair few year's

Maybe not Blockbuster, but the thing that I find sad is the likes of HMV going. Where can you now go to buy a CD or DVD on the high street?
Woolworths going was no great loss, only really sold tat and sweets, but HMV in my mind leaves a hole in the high street. The store in Rotherham closed some months ago, I found out when I went to buy a couple of CDs and it wasn't there. Came home and ordered online.

Lets bring back the 5 1/2 or 6 day trading week, that in its self should reduce everyones overheads, while still maintaining the sales.

It's a start!!

Somewhere around Swindon

i dont agree loads of building materials like plaster and plasterboard are sold in wickes at the same price as tradepoint

I recently bought some ply in wickes at about £26 iirc and homebase was selling exactly the same for near on £80

I used to work for Wickes until September last year when I left. Still speak to some of my old managers and they say that there not doing to bad at all. Always offer price match etc to take customers out of the market who would usually buy else where.

998 t2 ongoing project.

No surprises really, how many of us actually buy things from shops nowadays? If companies fail to adapt to the modern world they don't stand a chance.. The only silver lining is that small independent traders may have more of a chance on the high street., especially music shops.

Wickes match just about anywhere for plaster, plaster board, bagged aggregates, cement and cheapo cement products like budget paving slabs and trade points prices are near as dammit the same, no point in including homebase as a guide because there prices are stupid, fine if Wickes and others can survive on that business model no probs, best of luck to them. But I thought they were supposed to be general diy stores, 19.99 for a drayton trv and locksheild pack, fuck off I could walk in off the street and buy those retail from my merchants for 12 quid a set, 2.49 for a 15mm ballofix valve-they are 81p at toolstation, in York wickes and ts are 200 yards apart!, in Sheffield they are within 30 seconds of each other. I don't buy a lot of timber so don't hold accounts but when I do I just use the merchants and buy retail on my card timber is still between 10-20. % cheaper than Wickes/b and q ect. For years wickes did an 18 mm bitumen impregnated osb roof sheet, it was great stuff-in recent years this has stayed the same price but now is just a sheet of osb with s sheet of bin liner glued to it, the reviews online for it are dire.
