I want to spend about 3-4k on a new daily driver, any suggestions?

Already considering

mk1 golf gti
corrado vr6
205 gti

something fun ideally, 3 months of owning something sensible is enough for me

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

turbo diesel would be my choice,

Astra sri diesel turbo 150 brake model, you have the economy, speed, at the touch of a button & the reliability, ...... nice car too

you have to work out the weekly, monthly, yearly, economy of a daily driver a fast petrol car will quickly kill your wallet.

The golf would get my vote. Had 5 of them before i went onto the audi's and mk 1 was cracking fun. I would be tempted with a mk2 16v in oak green!

I'd be looking at something a bit more modern.

Maybe an ST170 Focus. Or a Megane Sport 225, or similar

you need to factor in running costs of a modern common rail diesel. DMF failure, pump failure, turbo failure, injector failure, EGR, increased service costs (oil and fuel filters are usually more expensive). you can fit LPG to petrol cars too :)

turbo 16v k-series 11.9@118.9 :)

Ek9 Type R. 180hp out the box from a 1600, and half right fuel economy when driven normally.

Civic type R gets my vote, as long as it isn't the last lardy generation one.

Or even a MK2 crx if you want to be a bit different.

Id vote ek9 but youd be pushing it for that price, new civics are heavy and shite, id go for an integra type r out of all the hondas on offer as there a good price for what they are. Probs my fave sensible road car.

Think I'm definitely leaning towards a mk1 golf. Just need to sell my leon now.

Mk1 golfs are brilliant, have you ruled out a mk2 tho, a bit more space and can get a 16v to make up for a little extra bulk.

I prefer the mk1 styling. Also if I don't get a mint gti. I might just get a 1300 driver and drop a 20v turbo or vr6 lump in it.

Sod the ek9. Integra type R is a better car/engine, cheaper and has more room.

Just watch out as they are getting a bit ropey. Rear arch rust is a killer and you can't see it unless you take out the rear plastics. Oh and careful of the oil burners.

Expect to pay around 4k for a good one. They can be as low as 2k or as high as 10k!

I'm a little biased *wink*
