i've had a set of s/c drops sitting in the garage for a couple of years, so i decided today to investigate wether they are suitable for a turbo engine..took apart an old spare engine to try them on.

the primary gear fits fine.

the first motion gear fits fine..

but the idler gear is a roller bearing type..so how does this fit?

i'm guessing that the original idler gear bearings need removing so that the s/c one fits, but it looks like its going to be loose?

is it the wrong type that i have? if so can i just buy a normal type s/c idler gear?

hope this makes sense??

It could be that you have a set of roller bearing drops suitable for A series rather than A plus? (that I assumed you tried them in an A Plus?) As one of the changes from A to A Plus was the size of the idler gear bearing.
As Jim says you remove the standard bearings as the idler now has its own bearing.

i'm going to pull the bearings out of the casings in the week and fingers crossed the idler will fit.. yeah tom i'm trying them in an A+, is it just the idler that varies from A to A+?
if so are the available seperatly?

as i was expecting, the idler don't fit.. i tapped the bearing out from the gearbox casing and the idler shaft is way too small..

star mag-you saying that the adapters can be brought from mini sport? how much?

the idler bearings are a pain to fit by the way. it took me ages to get mine in because they are an interferance fit.

I used a slide hammer and an appropriately sized washer to get mine out. Worked ok, but was a bit crude.

Dave, can this specialist puller/installer still be bought? I saw one in an article Calver did in mini magazine and thought it would be a nice addition to my toolbox...

i got mine a few years back too - the place I got it from appears to no longer exist (OEM tools supplier) - will have a look next time i'm around there, they do pop up on ebay from time to time too...
