I'm thinking about buying one of these

http://www.phormula.co.uk

I'll probably go for the KS-4, as I can connect to my ECU via the 0-5v output. Just wondering if any body would be interested in a group buy. If so I'll make some enquires. I know the minimum group buy order is 5 units with bigger discount for 10 units. Discount is approx 15%.

£354 *surprised* at that price I think i'd buy anoter VEMS unit that comes with full sequencial injection/ ignition, EGT, closed loop boost control, and dual wideband in one box for £450! Who says you need to use it for injection *wink*

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

I didn't think knock sensors worked with an A-Series due to all the random noise generated by the valvetrain.

Metric is for people who can't do fractions.

Worked well on mine very well tbh
I had a knock sensor and a detcan port lol
And there are others that use them too

Think I may have said this before ...placement of the sensor plays a big part I had it on the alternator bracket and got nothing but noise then the dizzy drive bolt and got very little compared to the det cans but when I put it on one of the top steady mount bolts it just worked *happy* and good placement imo next to cyl 4 usually the most likily to knock first

Yes and no really,

there are units with selectable frequency so you can match it to the bore size of the engine as aparently this is related to the frequency of the knock, also there are units with adjustable threshold so it will ignore anything quieter than x ( basically the knock should be pretty loud)

robert runs an XS knocklite iirc, these have a learn setting where you rev the car and it remembers the background noise level and ignores it, this seems to work as i think roberts only had it on when he forgot to pull the choke out on the strip and done the head gasket due to a lean mix.

some of the ECU's (MS3 does, I assume VEMS has a similar setting) you an set a knock window, so you would set it for say 10-40 degrees after tdc where the det is going to happen, and it will ignore everything else.

yup joe is correct I run the xs knock lite ,works very well . if I hold it at 6500 on 6psi for about 3 mins it will just flash a little as the chamber heats up .

when I blew the head gasket I did have the choke out , but did not have my sensible head on . it was such a good launch ,when the light came on I tried to pedal the throttle to get a good run hoping it would go out .

It never did .... instead I lost about 1/2 inch of head gasket .matt woods did the same damage in the same place on his gasket at that meeting , so I put it down to naff fuel.

How much are the Nocklite gauges? Looks like a better solution, as it takes engine speed into account. Where have you got your sensor mounted robert?

I've had a look, but the xs knock lite gauges seem to have been discontinued on all the websites I find.

Robert any pics of it mounted? I have the dsn alloy steady and wondered if it would still be ok to mount the sensor ontop of that or if the alloy would change the sound? Might be being stupid here...

Also what was the learning process like? There doesn't seem to be much info on the gizzmo version that has replaced the one you have?

Thanks
Graham

hi graham ,
I had a look but cannot see any pictures anywhere ,it just sits on a longer version of the front bracket bolt with a spacer to stop it hitting the bracket .
the setup involves revving it to various rpm and recording the sound by pressing the setup button . very easy .

Thanks Robert.

Alaskanow - I have contact the US disti and a UK company to see if they can do better prices?

Will let you know what they say. So far the US is £150 shipped to the UK with the sensor and loom, but you always have the risk of the import duty.
UK is about £190

Robert any advantage to getting a new sensor? I was just thinking that if I was going to spend the dosh might as well get a new sensor?

I have emailed them and asked if they can match the us price if we get a group buy going... Will see what they say

no idea graham ,but since they work for so long on production cars I felt one would have to have really bad luck to find a duffer ?

Ok dudes....

I have had a reply, the disti in the USA can do them for
$164.25 including the sensor

We need a min of 5 units and then we would need to pay shipping $52 for all five to a single address

So each this would be about £110 each, now the kicker is we might be hit with customs duty and they will need posting in the uk?

What does everyone think?
