Evening all...

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with crap mobile phone reception in their house? Mine is poor at best, have to hang out the window to make a call. I rang my provider, EE, and they were useless saying it must be my house. Spoke to the neighbours, all crap too on any network... We're in a black spot I guess.

My question is, has anyone used a signal booster than can be plugged in at home? And if so, do they actually work?

Cheers...

Ya they were so unhelpful, I rang and they said my area has coverage so not their fault. I asked for a booster and they said no, my problem end of! They do have them but only give them to customers when it is EE's fault, won't even sell me one! Wank!!!

I've generally found mobiLe signals have got a lot worse in the last year. Not sure if it is to do with the change to 4g? This coming from someone who knows nothing of how it all works!

If you have an android phone I think ee do an app that let's you use your wifi for reception.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Vodafone state that it should have no effect as 4G is just data and not voice. We've had a lot of noise at work about voice signals being poor of late. Can it really be such a big coincidence?

Is it an I (sheep) phone 4? There is a well known fault where they report good voice signal when in fact it's piss poor.

No it's the fairly new 5c. The missus has the galaxy s4 mini and same thing with her... As with anyone who comes to ours.

The works phones are Vodafone and they've gone all day without reception sometimes! I've only been on EE for about 6months but a lot of people have said how bad they have been since going with tmobile :(

do you have allot of insulation in the roof and walls? the aluminium on them reflects phone signals... lots of new buildings here who are build with e 70 norm need an "boost box" for there signal

you can do anything if you set your mind to it...
i rather blow it up winning than keep it together losing.

Yeah I think your probably right Rammie, it's a new gaff indeed. Someone else did mention that to me... Step outside, a few feet away, and it's generally ok...

Look into one of those signal boosts. If it is that it could save you lots of cold nights standing outside japping with the mother in law.

If a phone company eg ee, Vodafone ect cannot give you the service you are paying for then you can cancel the contract at any point. I have done this myself with o2 and a few friends and family have done the same after moving houses.

I am on EE I set my phone to receive orange masts, much better connection *smiley*. As it doesn't try to jump from t-mobile to orange.

Be aware that, although there are several seemingly reputable independant companies selling "signal boosters", on a technicallity, only ones provided by the mobile phone operators themselves, are "legal".

The technicallity is that only the mobile phone operators themselves are licenced to transmit at the specified frequencies, no-one else, and as the repeater takes an incoming weak signal with a high gain receiving ariel, amplifies it and re-transmits it from another ariel in your house, the last bit is un-licenced.

The reason for it not being allowed by the general public is the amplifiers inevitably cause a slight phase shift (delay) in the signal and with little or no control over the output, this can easily interfere with the real signal (especially if it is weak anyway).

The ones the mobile phone operators (very occassionaly) provide are also quite a different beast. They have two way communications with the mobile phone company (often by a landline internet connection) and thus control their output to avoid interference.

Obviously the chances of it really being a problem, or ever getting caught, are minimal, all I would suggest is don't make it obvious.

ie, if you need a large high gain directional receiving ariel (eg, to get high speed 3G internet access in a very rural area a long way from the nearest mast) don't mount it outside in full view. Put it in the loft behind a discrete vent panel.....

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

Well when I spoke to EE they said I could not as our area does have coverage. Even if I did cancel, I'd be in the same position with any provider I'm sure..

Ha the neighbours would be wondering what's going on when a telephone mast appears out of my roof! Can these signals be detected, like the tv licensing people?

Just went into EE, they reckon we can get a booster box?? I'll phone them again and open a can of whoopass!!

You yust receive what you pay for... only you chose to boost it. Its your signal not someone else's. .. if you split the tv cabel on to 5 tv's scatterd over the house you'll need to boost that signal. .. nothing illegal as long as you not provide the whole street with that signal...

you can do anything if you set your mind to it...

Yes, well except the TV licence people can't detect as it's receiving - just an urban myth about detector vans - but a "boosted" 2.1GHz signal can easily be detected, but it simply won't happen unless the authorities want to find it and know where to look..... highly unlikely.
Hence my comment, be discrete if you want to do it with devices not authorised by your network provider.

If your mobile service provider will give (probably charge you for) a box, it's legal because only they have the licence to transmit on that frequency.
