I can select all gears but cant get any drive (turning wheels while jacked up).

I have checked that the:

Clutch slave works
Clutch does move
Gear selector is attached (can feel it going into gear)
Both drive shafts are connected

I have turned the crank pulley and this moves the flywheel and tappets as it should.

Really stumped as to what would cause this, its as if the clutch is never engaging.

Put the car in gear and see if it will turn the engine over, obvious check but it's a basic start.

After that it's either box, drop gears or clutch is permanently disengaged

13.95 1/4 mile on a 2.95 fd. Carnt be that hard to beat!

If while on the jack, make sure one wheel is on the ground while turning the other by hand
Both wheels off the ground just turns the diff

Is this a fresh build? Could be lots of things, but if so I reckon it'll be something pretty fundamental such as flywheel loose, idler gear missing, clutch plate missing, final drive pinion missing etc etc

Hopefully its something simple Nick.

I would be inclined to leave the engine off, put it in 4th gear, push the car and see if this turns the engine over. This will cause less damage if (for instance) the flywheel is spinning on the crank.

In the 13's at last!.. Just

I assume you have started the mini ? so cant see the flywheel spinning on the crank.

Forgot to fit the idler gear? I cant think of anything other than the flywheel which isnt doweled or keyed so it would provide(some) drive even if it was loose.

If you have installed the clutch plunger wrong it can hold the clutch disengaged all the time. Take the wok off sprag the engine in place with a lump of wood and try again see if you then have drive .

Is this a pre verto clutch?
I believe the wok is different on early ones..only slightly though around the clutch plunger and doesnt allow it to fully retract off the clutch

try slacking off all the wok bolts 3-4 turns see if that fixes it

Yes i moved to the darkside *happy*

first up id back the adjustment bolt right out till its not touching anything as if that is to far out it will hold your clutch open been there but mine still had some drive just slipped when accelerating tho

i have experinced the pot joints falling out due to bad c clips had to push them in by hand and drive a few hundred meeters then re push them in to limp home once not fun.. check that they are full on the splines

think ill guess it to be clutch related tho as said get a jack under the flywheel side and pop the mount/what ever else to get the cover off n see whats going on in there it could be the diagram not bolted up correct or the plunger as said already on a pre verto plunger mine was a press fit of the bearing if that was half on i could see it holding the clutch open

My money is on the the diff free wheeling as there is no resistance from the wheels as it's in the air.

Try it yourself. If you jack the front of the car up and turn one wheel it just goes round without turning the diff. This is why minis wheel spin the left wheel and leave the right wheel pretty much stationary.

BINGO!! It was late haha needed sleep!

Problem I have now is I can't get a spark. When I crank the engine I notice that the green light on the MJ init goes out but stays on with just pre ignition. Guessing I have it on the wrong live?

sounds like you have the MJ on a circuit that gets cut when cranking

You need a live that doesn't drop out on cranking but you already know this.

I took a live from the out put of fuse 1 through another fues to lower the rating.

If you still dont get a spark try reversing the wires on the VR sensor.

The live I have used is the 3rd down on the left, which should I be using?

Quarry Bonk

You should be taking feed from second ignition click, thick white wire coming from the ignition barrel.

But not directly from the ignition switch and it's wiring.

2 minutes with the multimeter will tell you which fuse will do what you need.
