Don't know how good the science is behind it but interesting. Mightycarmods is a brilliant show.

This crops up every couple of months the black paint will help radiate the heat but insulate it from conducting the heat to the air...swings and round abouts but how many oem manufacturers paint there ally rads black?

Yes i moved to the darkside *happy*

I think black factory intercoolers used to be common. Cossie ones, MR2 ones etc.

The one on my A3 & Penny's A4 is silver.

To me conclusion is stood still loads (drag racing) = black on the move loads = silver

Or you could get a little fan to try and keep the heat soak out of it?

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

If OEM dont paint it...it's largely down to cost.

Why waste money on paint unless it's absolutely necessary ?

IMO matt black is the best colour...but it would then depend on how much paint, and actual fin/gill designs. You could easily find that the paint clogs up the fins which in itself would reduce efficiency.

But as long as the unit is of adequate size, I'd say any difference on a moving vehicle would be almost immeasurable.

If the IC/rad is exposed to sunlight, then black probably isnt the best colour. If it's sheltered from heat sources, then it probably is.

I'm no scientist but I do have qualifications in Thermodynamics.

The conclusion is correct........ paint your intercoolers black.

But, their reasoning is flawed.

Two facts to consider. 1. Heat flows from hot to cold. 2. Shiny surfaces reflect heat just like a mirror reflects light.

A shiny intercooler would be best to avoid underbonnet heat soke at standstill because the under bonnet temperature will be higher than or the same as the air in the pipe. They concluded the opposite because they ran the test with hot air in the pipe which should not happen.

I would have expected the matt black intercooler to perform better with air flow. If you just coat a polished intercooler with matt black paint, it will not do much good. Heat still sees the shiny surface under the paint as it passes from the hot side to the cold side. Take the shine off before you paint it.

i think this whole thing is stupid..

just put a bigger than needed cooler in there and not worry about it for gods sake a cold charge is free!! HP!!

i will be disapointed if my liquid ic dosent match ambint temps with in a few degreese all the time in witch case i will plumb an ice box in! its not a day driver but a toy! fill up fuel and drop a few bags of ice in then burn the fuel up!

Alright then fair enough but look at it from a common sence point of view does it really matter ? If you rely on the paint for that last gnats pubes worth of heat transferal just buy a more suitable radiator / intercooler

+ 1 with brett just gett a better cooler!!! why use a tinny peace of shit when you could be comfortalbe with a larger cooler all be it a bit harder to fit in the bay and all imo its way worth it!! for the sake of few bucks on a good cooler vs and engine tear down to replace things id rather the better cooler and leave the engine alone

the way i see it is the limiting factor on boost/compression is the charge temp so if you bring the charge down then you can raise boost and or compression! free hp really!

sorry if im presing the posint but surely to build any engine and strangle it with hight charge temps is a waste compared to a once off expense/effort of a good cooler!!

In £/hp terms, painting your intercooler, whatever size, is very good value.

What about under load at low speeds, surely then the colour of the cooler starts to help. Most standard mini rads are black too. Unless you want it shiny to show it off I would say the black cooler is the better option. Unless of course it's right next to a heat source.

if you read some comments they calculated it wrong. watch the video again and write down their readings and do the maths. there is about a few degrees difference.
