Apologies if this is on here somewhere but i tried searching and couldnt really get a answer (got a good link to www.eyehandy.com how to videos tho *wink* ) but anyways..... this isnt my turbo overheating, just a normal n/a 998 in pretty much standard tune, always been local runs out so never noticed it getting hot but travelled to norwich (bout 45 minutes from me) and the needle kept creeping up past normal... even on journey home at midnight! Timing was checked a couple months ago, plenty fluids in there, rad is not very old and nor is waterpump, it isnt just guage or sender as it is actuall hot
hot under bonnet! And no the fan isnt simply on wrong way round which i was hoping for... is there anything else it could be apart from thermostat stuck????

Timing? Fueling? Head-gasket gone into the waterways? When mine went I never felt a noticeable drop in power

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

Shauna's is like this, new rad, waterpump is a year old, no visible leaks, car doesn't smoke but under load it goes halfway between N and H and then off load it creeps back down to N and no noticeable water loss, Going to try radflush to see if the block is covered in crap. No leaking matrix either!

I would check the thermostat first.

My son's overheated a while ago and, despite the top radiator hose and top of the radiator being hot, the thermostat had frozen just slightly open, enough to heat the hose but not cool the engine.

Threw it in a pan of boiling water and it didn't move from partly open.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

I checked the stat before fitting as i know some are dodgy so as far as I'm aware it's not a factor in our case

What pulley sizes are you running? I didn't realise there are three sizes and if you run the smallest it can make it overheat on the motorway or prolonged high revs by effectively overspining the pump, have a read through the minispares site it explains it better than I can

Speeding is like masturbating, everyone does it, but not all of us film it and put it on the internet

Northamptonshire.

Lee has a piont

Bigger pulley would help top end cooling

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

if all else checks out my monies on the ignition timing too retarded it has a massive effect, just pop it on the rollers and get it sorted for a few quid .............. and also pick up a few more horse power as well as a good running engine

Has this only happened since the timing was checked? Was the timing moved .could the dizzy be lose? Running lean could also heat it up on a long run.

Swansea boyo!

Mine has been okay until a few months ago (obviously hot weather is a factor) but it's been tuned and the rest of it last year, the rad was only changed this year too. I've never let it go above 3/4 so I'm not sure if it would actually get to the H if I carried on going. I can't sit at 65 for more than 10mins later at night without it creeping up anymore!

I'll get Carl to let you know if flushing helps as he's got the wip atm, it's not going to be a good drive to IMM if it's getting warm :(

Of course I do, it's my daily drive. I only really ever go more than 15mins anywhere once a month. It's only creeping up under load or at higher speeds.

Rightio people... cycled to my garage where this little white mini lives n dug it out to have another look at this overheating problem.. havent touched it since last post.. pulled plugs out to see if it was hot due to running lean but they looked fine, left the rad cap off n pulled heater tap out n let it run for a while.. it didnt go over half just sat there... took it out for a run down the bypass a few times (as i only noticed it over heated on a run out of town initially anyway) it sat at 80 for roughly 6 miles n the needle only just went over half (N) (bear in mind its cool out now n i noticed this problem on a right scorcher off a day in july) when i stopped i put heater on n its was scorching hot! Bonnet was cold, engine didnt seam to give off any proper heat i was expecting.. i could hold the top hose easily as that was warm.. but i couldnt hold the heater hose that was HOT!!!! Is there anything else it could be than thermostat stuck? I will try that next unless any ideas from you lot??

Me personally, for the sake of a few quid I'd change the 'stat or at least test it to see if it's opening properly. I've had a few failing on my civic but they have been jamming open so the car wasn't getting up to temp. It wasn't jammed open much, probably a few mm, but it made a big difference to running temp, it was barely getting warm.

Failing that flush the system through?

I see in the OP you had a new water pump, 2 months ago I changed a leaking pump in my standard '96 for a QH pump from local motor factor. Everything seemed fine driving local until I took it down the motorway 70mph, temp went up and down as I eased off. Cheaked everything and each time I cruised around 70mph temp went up. Ordered and fitted a new pump from MS 2 weeks ago and car is back to normal high speed cruising 80mph no problem. Bad pump was the plastic impeller type. May be worth a swap.

Took this out today to have a run and try get it hot even tho this time of year and town use it wont get hot like it did? BUT on way home it started buckarooing and got worst n worst until it was undriveable! It was like someone was turning the key on n off continuously very quickly!! I lost spark for a lil while then i got it back enough to get it home but the 'on off on off' style driving got worst... ill try look at it tomo ill try a different coil, condensor? And compression tester.... does it sound like anything else? Any ideas welcome

Went to it this morning and swapped new coil and all was fine... for roughly a 20 minute journey... tinker with other bits, theres me thinking all sorted but then i go to take it home and its back to bucking!! So is it me thinking its coil but as uve just said vapour lock? And that its just fine when it cold?
