Hello

I love the idea of having a small milling machine and lathe to use whenever I want rather than having to ponce machine time at work.

I'm already saving for a acdc tig welder... Probably rtechs 160amp one.

My question is how many of you have mills and lathes to use in your garages/workshops, and how often you use them. Which is most used etc

Cheers

Lathe yes. Mill yes. ACDC TIG yes. Bandsaw yes.

Lathe is probably the most used.

I have a little toy lathe lol, it has done everything I have asked it to, but I am still got an eye out for ml7 after seeing wolfies *smiley*

The ban saw I have just needs some tlc before I get it running

I found a nice big belt sander which is a good bit of kit.

The drill stand I have is just a little Clarke job but again it's up to everything I have asked it.

I am finding that I would love a little mill,

I have started posting on Instagram also my name on there is turbomk1golf

Nothing is impossible it just costs more and takes longer.

Cold Saw, Colly 15" lathe (just rebuilt the headstock - gear heaven), Bridgeport 2J2 (on a mobile stand so I can roll it around as needed), Finger Brake, vert saw, 20 ton press, wash tank, horiz saw (junk compared to cold saw), oxy acetylene (borrowed lol), mig, dynasty Tig, and a crap load of 3 phase juice *smiley*
And my most recent aquisistion; a 8x4ft welding table with 3/4" slab on the top. A bitch to move, but ready to take my beverly shear, pipe clamps and anvil.

Sold the forklift a few months ago, but it was surplus to my needs having all the equipment in place (but sure would have like to have it when I got the welding table lol).

But the best "new" thing in my garage is all the new lighting I just put up. I can't believe how long I struggled with working in the dimly lit environment. I don't even need a worklight on the mill or lathe... Good Lighting is seriously under-rated. *smiley*

Fucked old lathe. Huge pillar drill. Bandsaw. Bench grinder/belt sander. Mig. Spot Welder.

Would like a mill and a lathe with less 'end float', but no cash or space...

Simon the Clarke or Sealey type mills are OK within their limitations.

I have one which can handle an A series block for facing or drilling for 11 studs with JUST enough travel on the table to do it..

What is a real PITA is when you have to unlock the head to raise or lower it on the column thereby losing all your settings.

A Bridgeport is the answer !

Thanks for the replies chaps, seems a few of you have the gear I dream of!

I have been looking at the cheap Clarke mills thinking I'll start with one of them and if I find its too small then upgrade to something big and old

Over the last 6 months ive had to build up my own machine shop. Its not an easy task but it is well worth buying proper machines rather then 'hobby' stuff. Much easier with 3 phase but you can get it with single for a bit more money.

For me the mill is by far the most important and gets the most use. Went for a Bridgeport with belt change head, DRO and traverse feed which was a snip at £1400, probably had to spend another £1000 on tooling but thats the way it is. Stuff doesn't get sold with tooling very often! Luckily China makes some affordable stuff nowadays.

Lathe wise i ended up with a cheap £400 Harrison but its not great, wish i had gone for an M300 or a late Student with a decent array of tooling even if it would cost 3-4 times as much!

Chinese portable bandsaws are great value and can be had for a couple of 100. Been as i only have space equivalent to a single garage i don't see the point in a pillar drill as well, just use the mill. Ive recently bought a ACDC Tig too but not having much luck getting it working yet. That what you get when you pay £400 for a £800 machine tho!

Come to think of it have a picture!
