Well, i decided to take the mini out for a run down to the workshop yesterday. On the way back, 'catching up' with Keith on the old A77, i got a bit of a graunch and a fair bit of noise as i changed from 2nd to 3rd and a complete loss of drive?

It is all a bit noisy at the drops until the clutch is depressed so thinking that is going to be the issue but time will tell. Given we have just taken in a fair amount of spares and storing a car for a mate right now, i need to tidy and sort the shed before i can get the car in and investigate

Bugger, hope it's nothing too major!

Something had to go at some point. At least it will give me a chance to sort the oil leaks and see why my oil pressure is dropping off so much when warm too

Don't think it will be as impressive.

The current noise i'm getting sounds like the drops to be honest so i thing i've stripped then to be honest

Doubtful. Both my failures have occured during gearchanges. Must just be the as a result of being loaded up/unloaded.

I'm still saying gearbox rather than drops.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

whatever it is, I really doesn't want to go down the route of SC. While I totally get the benefits, it has been a nice car to run about in (I can actually hear the radio) and SC stuff is just too noisy (god I'm getting old!)

Sc box and heli drops aren't bad Rob. I can bimble around at 30ish in 4th and it's almost silent.

I'll make some decisions once I know what is actually broken

think i can agree that if im coasting around its fairly quite
sc drops and box but when its all loaded up the noise grows

it would be awesome if someone made an affordable double helical box and drops.. the once that have zero side load and are silent

I absolutely love the whine sc gears make and i still used headphones and ear defenders on long jurneys
I would try to avoid using sc for a road car johns is a good compromise ljke he says once its dropped into 4th there as quiet as any heli box and going up through 1.2.3 its really not that bad
Not enough supersonic oil to make the loud whine *hehe!*

Yes i moved to the darkside *happy*

don't get me wrong, can't beat the sound of SC stuff but it doesn't suit this car or what I intend to use it for. All the SC stuff is currently destined for the Metro........

No drive in 4th ?

Std drops can handle lots of power, and as others say even with straight cut gears, 4th will then be silent as normal

I could stick it in any gear and push the car about (albeit with a bit of resistance but not turning over engine)

Given it towed back ok and the noise coming from the engine in neutral, i'm suspecting drops

Well, after a bit of tidying up at the shed (we took in some cars to help out a mate), i got a couple of hours this afternoon to get the engine out the car and see what went wrong. Got to say i was pretty happy to have the engine out and on the bench in just under a couple of hours. Granted, i've taken engines out quicker but i was taking my time to make sure i didn't damage the paint.

Dropped the oil and found a few gear teeth on the sump plug so clearly an internal issue.

Anyhow, all came apart quite easily. Flywheel came off fairly easily and upon removal of the clutch housing, it was clear the drops were fine. Pulled the box off and found first motion partially stripped and 4th on laygear completely stripped.

I'm pretty much resigned to putting the SC box back in but think i'll keep the helical drops for now

Im also going to investigate why the oil pressure isn't quite as i would expect before it goes back together

Ouch. I hope the filter caught most of it. Time for a new oil pump at least ? How much BHP did this?

Cheers robert. It was actually the basis of the link re the drops that made me take the SC ones out. I do think your efforts were a bit more impressive though!
