Hi all ,

I have a mg metro turbo here .. The body is in decent shape but the engine is shot . The block and head both have a groove burnt out between the cylinders and one piston is slightly melted on the side .

Now the plan is to get this back on the road by building up another a plus block( which I have from an Spi mini) and a 12g940 unleaded head using stainless steel valves.

The first question is simply .. Is this a sound plan?

The second ( assuming the answer to q1 is yes) is where can I source either a set of (possibly just1) standard turbo piston or which after market piston would be best ,considering it will be running standard boost?

Thank

Someone may have a piston lying round. Failing that if the new block is worn go for the cast omegas

My opinion, looking at the state of that a new block will need to be sourced too, a skim to take that much damage out will massively raise the compression ratio, which is unsuitable for a turbocharged engine.

Yeah that's the plan .. The op was supposed to say I have an a plus block from an spi mini.

I was tempted to see if it could be welded but decided against it

Are turbo spec pistons not available in the original size then? I wasn't planning on a rebore as the block looks good but I can't find any anywhere .

I have had a message from a member that has some original pistons available so I may go down that route if I can't buy good new standard size ones.

Last set of OE new turbo pistons I saw available was 10 years ago!

I'm assuming these are used . Are the rings available?

Rings are available but make sure they are the correct ones. There are ring packs out there sold as turbo rings that have a different width oil ring.

New ones have been consigned to history now, people like us keep melting them!

Search for total seal in the search box and theres a thread with part numbers somewhere for the correct ones to order.

They missed a trick by discontinuing them !

Thanks I'll check that out .

Also take a look here. Minispares seem to suggest there were 2 turbo piston part numbers (???) and can supply an alternative ring set for one of them. Best measure the ring sizes though to see if yours matches up.

I had an issue with the replacement rings for mine if I recall. Think it was the oil control. A few years ago now and I had to get them NOS from another member

The only rings available for the standard turbo piston are the Total Seal rings. Those who have tried to find rings from elsewhere either end up with an oil ring that is the wrong size, or just can't find them. There may be the odd set of rings still available (I know a man) but the cost of them then justifies the price on the Total Seal rings.

Thanks for all the help guys.

I think I've decided on sourcing an extra piston as the others look fine to me. Assuming I can get rings that is .. I'll search them now .

best get the ignition and fueling sorted so it doesn't happen again.

What exactly would that involve? ( I'm still very much learning here )

I had planned to give the carb a good clean out and set then timing up to standard settings . is there more to it ?

No, it's not. Pachancho, a portuguese company, makes them.

Check the carb is in good health, set the ignition timing correctly and its probably worth getting the car set up on a rolling road, to ensure the fueling is correct and the timing is what the gun says it is.

Cost delivered to a UK address?

If its not much less than £120, I'd still opt for the Total Seal.

total seal us has 4 different numbers for the rings... but what a ring set!! i have had a block skimmed original size turbo pistons and total seal rings.... started to turn engine over while upside down on table... started to struggle i thought i done something wrong. but it apeared to suck vacuum on the table top!

you can do anything if you set your mind to it...
i rather blow it up winning than keep it together losing.

finish date set for project 1... march 2018

Thanks for your help minimole 😊

Now if I can source one good turbo piston I'll place an order for those rings .

The donor block is now stripped down ready for a thorough clean .
