Obviously not a lot of choice here, but which tyres are best to go for on 10x5.5" banded steels?

Car will be a "near-daily driver" - probably around 6-7000 miles/yr. We are also planning a trip to France potentially.

Choice seems to be Falkens, and Yoko 008 or 032's.

I always liked the 008s when I had my car as a daily driver. currently on 032s but never used them in bad weather to comment

008s are useable in the wet ive certainly had worse..

its a near daily driver Brett; given the monsoon season we're having these days, I'd suggest a fair bit of wet weather driving

Correct. Will be used in all used in all weathers really.

I read something on TMF saying the A032's are actually better in the wet than the A008's? Is that right? Always thought of the A032's as a track day tyre.

Heard good reviews of the Avon CR6ZZ although not cheap. There are dunlop R7's not heard a great deal about these and I think the others are dunlop aquajets, which aren't meant to as good as A032s.
Just some other options for you

I have found 032 good in the wet, well summer rain.... I would guess in deeper water or snow they will be sub optimal, but I do t take the car out in those conditions

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

I'm sure Ive heard the name 'Auqa Tusk' relating to the tread pattern design associated with the AO32r with it being manufactured to favour well in wet conditions.

I've heard they do well in wet, but it's when you hit standing water etc that they don't fair well!

I found the 032r tyre better in the dry and wet than the A008s

You can cut the a032r into an even better wet pattern by just continuing the tusk bit all the way to the edge of the tyre.

I've heard excellent things about the Avons.

Edit: Avons on duds r1 mini.

I don't like my A032's - Preferred my old A008's. I am odd, though.

Diagram for cutting if anyone was interested. My explanation was pretty poor.

165/70r10 (road legal) Best Grip;

WET - Yoko A032r
DRY - Avon CR6ZZ

However, in the dry the Avons take a while to warm up so I suppose not ideal on a road car. The 32r`s are a very soft compound and soft side wall so heat up quickly. This aids the wet weather performance, and also good dry performance from a cold start. The downside of this soft compound means they have a relatively fast wear rate.

For your needs I would recommend the 32r`s.

Jonny - that`s interesting about the extra cuts, looks like they would work really well in theory.

I like my 008's however the well worn A032r's that were on it when I first got it on the road though did offer more dry grip though. Never tried them in the wet.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

I "think" it not legal to cut tyres for the road, can anyone clarify?

My understanding is that it is not legal to re-groove road tyres - they're simply not designed to do so. But additional cuts made no deeper than the original tread depth is acceptable.
Of course this might just be folklore so people can convince themselves! I put extra cuts in A-008s to improve their wet weather grip.

Years ago I had some A008's on my Mini when they first came out.
Got pulled over by a copper who accused me of drilling holes in my bald tyres! They were only a few weeks old! I only managed to convince him by pulling out a magazine with a Yokohama advert printed in it.

just had a google round and its a bit muddy,

you cant regrove tyres for cars and vans, apparently its allowed for lorries...

but that seems to be talking about adding grooves deeper than the originals "regrooving" not adding grooves.

I used to re-cut truck tyres for my dad all time. I think my record was a full rig of 20 tyres (6x2 tractor unit and a 3 axle trailer in the days before super-singles) in one day including removing and refitting them.

I used to need an 6ft+ bar to slacken the wheelnuts prior to whizzing them off with air-gun.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.
