I work in motorsport but i am at college myself studying my HND. Run a few Historic F1 Cars and a few other bits up in Norfolk.
TBH your best bet is to write to everyone who is stupid enough to put their name and address in either the Autosport Directory or the Yellow Pages.

The autosport directory normally comes with a copy of autosport around the new year! If not i believe there is something on the autosport website about it. If not search on the net, knock on people's doors and generally hassle people. I spent £25 on stamps sending letters out begging for jobs, and once you have your foot in the door somewhere, everyone else offers you a job!!!! :(

Whereabputs are you doing your ND in Motorsport S1275GTt? I am at Brooklands College in Surrey doing my HND and are finding it a bit tedious and irrelevant, but at the end of the day a HND is a respectable qualification so not really bothered.

Basingstoke college, in my second year atm. Most of it is pretty irrelevant, and none of the work is motorsport related! lol

Thats right Antman, send enough letters and some one stupid enough will take you on !!!! Well we had to be really !!! lol So if your running the cars what does that leave for Darren to do ?? just mucking , How you doing Ant ?

Currently mainly work In A1 Grand Prix series on the Australian Teams car, basically its F3000. Been working in motosport for 10 years, was partner in team for a few years. Looking more to supply comonents into motorsport industry in future. Got a BSC (Hons).

As Ant said it really is about getting a foot in the door. Offering to help a team for free at weekends is a good place to start. Call up teams and ask if you can come and see them, shows a bit more get up and go than just a letter. Even if they dont have anything you can help with, when they do you will be the face that comes to mind. Ant did well last year when we helped get him some experience at BAR. Motorsport is quite a small community, lots of people know each other, so when you have a foot in the door and proved yourself then many doors can quickly open.

Dont know how to put this, but dont be cocky about what you know. Ive seen students who talked themselves up and when it came to it they knew nothing, a big disapointment.

Seen a few of these...

We had one at Eaton a few years back - a real 'know it all'. He left after only 6ish weeks - as he had an answer back from cosworth, and decided to do his placement there instead. We were sooooooo overjoyed - and spend the next few weeks sniggering at the expense of some poor bugger from cosworth who had no idea what he was getting for the next 12 months!

I'd agree with that, no matter how much you know, or think you know, there is no substitute for a few years actually "doing" it.

You will get a lot more respect if you are understated about what you know, but are keen to learn and show initiave to do things under your own steam.

I'd also agree with what Mirage said about the motorsport trade being very "cliquey", it is a very tight knit community of people, with most of them knowing each other, and quite rightly once your foot is in the door and you begin to prove yourself, opportunities will occur.
