If you can get me a sample of each layshaft then I should be able to get a brinell hardness test done on them.

sounds good Tom cheers, if i sent you a new one would you be able, if you could get it tested that is, would you be able to test the area near the bearing, so i could have the new layshaft back to use again if we like the tests? Best 1/4 mile 13.2 seconds @116 mph

Can certainly try, let me know when you have the layshafts to test and I will see what I can organise.

I've got full access to a Rockwell tester if it's needed.

I will have to have it done at work, with Christmas shutdown looming, I am realistically not going to be able to get them done until at least mid January.........

Oh, please include mainshafts as well, as it seems as the A+ (factory fitted) ones are made of chocolate. The A ones seems so much better wearing... On 13th Jul, 2012 Ben H said:

I've never had a mainshaft problem Vegard? Same one i've used since my mini was a turbo - been through standard, quaife, and the current gearset (with rebuilds) but still the original mainshaft from the 1987 turbo that gave it's bits and bobs to my project...

Dave i know what Vegard is on about, i had problems wih the bearing wearing on the main shaft, but since having an A+ shaft things seem much better as the bearings are as i'm sure you know, quite a bit bigger. As someone from Rover told me. The reason things are bigger in the A+ stuff, is that it's made of inferior material. The 80ies were THE time of cost reduction in the car industry, and look at how English car industry went.. If it's bigger, it's badder when it comes to Rover diameters, honest! fear point, but if you fit 7" wheels on your mini and then you fit 13" wheels on and drive it at the same speeds as each other, then which wheel will be turning slower, the bigger one. Best 1/4 mile 13.2 seconds @116 mph

Same rpm yes, but circumferential speed will be different. All lathe machinists will know all about this!!!!

If you put a larger bearing on something using the simplistic analogy a few of you are trying to adopt, bearings just wouldn't work!

If your interested i have run a MS competion pre A+ for 61/2 years. Touch wood ive had no problems. Its had an aweful lot of shit thrown at it with 150 hp plus flat gearshifts at 8-9000 revs. I am going to take it out and check it in january. I havent tried an A+ type.
I seriously doubt it! |
