Plymouth, On the floating skip known as HMS Albion

caliper bolts need to be slightly longer and you'll need caliper spacers to centralise them over the brake disc

Whats going to break next!?

EH? That is a new one on me. My car uses Metro 4 pots on Mini hubs. There are no spacers anywhere to centralise the caliper on the discs, they fit correctly already........

Thread Revival!!

Evening chaps, i've just converted my 78 clubby estate from drum brakes to 8.4" disks.

However i have problem...

I have gone round the car 5 times bleeding the brakes. Every time i get the same thing, a what seems great pedal. Then as soon as i go and take it for spin, the pedal goes straight to the floor, and no brakes...

I can't find any leaks, my only thoughts is the master cylinder size?

Got the old bake been tins... do i need to change to the split system.

Am i missing something obvious?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Oli.

i had mine on a single circuit bake bean thin setup on my clubby!

worked great

keep it simple i say!

check your rear brake shoe adjusters are'nt rounded or get some new ones as they're cheap! check you flexi break pipes, one coup be knackered & balooning, i had that when

i swapped from drums to disks, it did'nt show on drums but did on disks???

the flexi hoses have been changed for new braided hoses.

Its had new shoes and adjusters on the back and have been adjusted.

The rear wheel cylinders dont seem to be leaking.

I shall check tomorrow.

I would be surprised, as my drums were working well (as good as drums get) before i removed them.

I had wheel bearing go, so decided while i was at it why not go for disks.

do you know something i had this same problom but the other way around

i had drums all round on my clubman & replaced all the wheel cylinders/flexi pipes/adjusters, some of the hard lines too & could not get brakes unless i pumped them up, i must have bled the system 20 times & it did'nt work

swaped to disks & problom solved starnge!!!!

same prob in reverse

Possibly when you have bled the brakes, you have pushed the master cylinder past its normal range of operation, and the seals may hve picked up on the bore. I have experienced this myself before. In any case, you want to be confident it is right, so I'd suggest a new master cylinder.

Tom, i used an ezi bleed kit to do it, so no pumpng required. so i assume they would have picked up when pedal went straight to the floor after?

Is there anyway to check this? Or is it just a case of putting a new master cylinder and see i it makes a difference?

Cheers for all the help chaps!!

If you get a good pedal after bleeding them and it only goes to the floor once you drive it, it could be a warped disk (or something trapped on its mounting face making it act as if it's warped) thus pushing the pistons back in the caliper as soon as you move. Then when you press the pedal they have to travel much further than they are meant to.

There's a brand new clutch master cylinder here Oli - I believe the bean tin ones are all the same so could be used fo brakes, but am preprared to be corrected *oh well*
