EFI A Series Turbo

Have you seen the price of "A"series engines on ebay recently,it's scary!. As most of us like pushing the old lump to it's limits and beyond there a pretty certain chance that we're going to suffer some major failures. There was a time when it was an easy job to pop to the scrapyard and find a new one,or buy a complete car out of the local free paper for next to nowt.
Mini's now,as has been mentioned elsewhere are fetching serious money for rubbish, but there are still a few Metro's about though, all be it not that many.how many pre "K"series Metro's have you seen on the road recently?
I though that it was about time I got a couple of spare engines before they got seriously expensive.I put an advert in the bargain pages for old metro's wanted, either 1275cc or 998cc and let it run for a month.
I did this about 7yrs ago when I was after a Turbo Metro to use as an engine doner,I must of had 20 people ring me.
The advert for ANY Metro produced 5 cars, 4 MG's and a 998cc. I brought all 5 cars for less than £200,this was money I couldn't really afford, but at least I've got a few more engines to have a go at breaking.
Get a spare engine or two NOW.
ps,
The Metro's were dispatched, after there hearts were removed, to the great motorway in the sky with dignity.

Well, it wasn't as good as a miller - BUT - worth EVERY penny of what it cost me. Why I didn't purchase one a few years ago is beyond me...

I've come to the same conclusion Graham, so I'm going hunting tomorrow. Already scored a 1275 auto engine and a 998 today.

I'm desperate for an 850 crank for the hillcimb engine, can I find one?! And a 4 syncho magic wand box or remote casing. None.

There are still a lot of mettys down here, and a turbo that looks like it won't pass another mot I keep tabs on....

There are a few down here, and there are 2 MG turbos i keep my eye on and have contacted both owners about selling.I know of at least 3 MG metros as well.
I agree the price is ever growing...

im doing the same, but mainly gearboxes as i see these as being the true start of the shortage. Last count was 4 1275's, 2 998's 2 850's, split turbo engine and several mg short engines with a stack of heads. Still not enough though, again i want more gearboxes.

I've seen the future and tbh its Pie

I'm glad we're all thinking along the same lines regarding engine shortage, I didn't think I would be the only one, starting a stash. I was offered a 1.3 Maestro, the other day, normally you would regard this as a bit of an insult, even for free!, I liberated the head though before it went to the crusher.

do you all realise if we all didnt collect a shed full of engines then there wouldnt be in such high demand and as such i dought the price would be so dear.
im determined not to collect to many as ive not really got the room, one spare of everything turbowise will do me i think, although i do have 2 or 3 engines.

so say each block can be bored out 2 or 3 times (unless major breakage occurs) that means some people have the equivelent to 42 engines lol

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

Sprocket I have seen worse!

OK, so the pistons are junk, and the crank will need a grind, but the main component parts, block, crank, rods, are all salvagable and are the parts needed to start an engine build!

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

wouldnt say that. i'd be tempted to keep it. metal spraying and re-machining is cheaper than a new crank at some point...
