Got it fired up just over an hour ago.
Temp is climbing (just like last year), so i'm going to try a 71degree (160F) thermostat to see if that helps it - instead of the 84 that's in there at the mo.

Wide-band lambda is brilliant - it's already telling me more than the narrow-band was of last year. We'll see how it looks under driving though!

Aside from that - I can't drive it as it's still on axle-stands and I've got to go out.
Still - it'll make for a nice Sunday drive eh?

Dave (very happy)

Well,

I pulled the old stat out a bit ago. I thought it was an 84 as that's what was stamped on the top.
BUT
Flipping it over revealled a 74 on the copper part on the undeside. Sure enough, the kettle test worked - it started opening at 74, and was fully open at 77.

I also had three 5mm holes drilled into it.
Oh well. The new stat went in - with holes - but I hold little hope that it'll sort it.

For those who remember, I never had cooling probs before swapping blocks. Same pump, head, stat, plumbing, rad - everything. Only thing that changed was the block.

In short - I've got a 'baddun'. I'm now 100% convinced that blocks are just plain worse than others (by a BIG margin) when it comes to cooling. :(

Something else very apparant compared to what used to happen, is the heat-soak that is generated after shutdown. I can see temps climb 10 degrees after shutdown! That is a LOT!

Think the electric pump I've talked about for the past few years will be on its way real soon.

The only thing I can think of Dave, is it worth trying to scour any build up off the internal passages of the block with some kind of acidic solution???

is there nothing you cvan do to the block to help? opening out waterways and such which via the core plugs? would be bloody tedious tho!

Block was acid dippped a month ago *wink*

At this point - a different water pump is a lot easie than any other option! LOL

Have you considered an electric water pump, I run one in mine and never see over 70 degs, it runs there all day long even flat out in 4th at 8000rpm. Had to blank 2 thirds of the rad off in the winter as I just couldn't get the temp up no matter how hard I tried.

I assume it's still on a carb.

I can't help with the overheating, I've had similar problems in the past but never resolved it.

Well, I swapped out the thermostat for a 71-degree one, and things seem a little better. I tested the stat first, and it starts openeing at 70, and is fully open by 72 - so that's an improvement of 5-degrees, which seems to have helped!

I've got an ideal position for my electric water-pump now aswell (for shutdown circulation mainly) - I just need to figure out a way of 'easilly' getting water out of one of the core-plugs in the end of the block to feed the pump.
I'm thinking of just drilling a hole through the middle of a new plug and welding a 19mm pipe onto it, then fitting it like any other core-plug.
Suck it and see I guess....

Dave can you plumb that shut down pump into the heater line? I see these come up from time to time on ebay, the factory pumps to cool turbos after shutdown. That would circulate coolant into the Rad and both would stay on using a thermoswitch on the rad to control them.

Just a thought.
