To recap what's different from last year:

1) Taller FD (3.1 - was 3.4)
2) New turbocharger (don't ask - I won't tell)
3) MG cam - was ph2

I also had a full compliment of tools, including a spare in the mini with me on this occasion.
Running just 14.5psi of boost (last year was 15/16ish). Still running an open diff, still running A032r's @ 18psi.

First problem was one I knew was going to appear; The clutch.

The new motor is making a shed-loads more torque on less boost. the startline was reasonably good (not upto Pod standards mind, but not bad). The big problem with the clutch, is that i'm now running a taller FD - hence the engine (and clutch) sees what is effectlivly a heavier car; the lower the gear, the more work the clutch has to do).
This is making things even more difficult; to put it into persepctive; on my first three runs, it would have looked (from the stands) like a pretty lazy launch; The tyres didn't spin, but the engine accelerated right up to red-line with the clutch making a feeble effort to hold the torque. Only when i dipped the clutch and hauled second, did it re-engage and pull through...

So, a change of tack was called for - a balancing act between clutch and power and traction. Out of the following nine runs, I ran consistent 13.8/13.9's at 102/103mph and 2.4/2,5 60-ft times (around 0.2-secs off my norm).
Then one just happened right, and it pulled in a 13.64 at 102.3mph - with a 2.34 60-ft.

I'm a happy bunny - things ARE going to improve BIG time once that boost gets would up to the levels folks do (but don't admit to) run *wink* , and I get my clutch sorted....

This taller FD really wants some weight to be pulled out of the mini to make things better though. I'm seriously considering polycarb side windows (but they'll still be opening rears / winder fronts) and maybe change the exceptionally heavy side-impact doors for some lightened regular versions...
I don't want to remove the stereo, Recaro's or carpet mind... That's a step toooo far!

I do (now) more understand why Woodsie has trouble launching his mini though; the standard weight vehicle, that lagggggggie T3, the characteristics of the double-grey - along with the even taller 2.95 diff must make it one of the most difficult minis to launch ever.

I know the rules we have here about 'unsubstantiated claims' - hence I will scan my ticket at work tomorrow and post it up. *wink*

Great stuff Dave, encouraging for me as my car will also be a full weight machine, with carpets, side impact bar doors, airbag, pretensioners etc, it is nice to know that with a wheelbarrow full of bananas a good time is not beyond reach.

I have to say I am impressed with how consistent you guys are up the 1/4, when I have tried before I have been happy to be within a 1 second margin!

nice one dave looks like we are all going in the right direction even me whos on his second visit to the pod got a 15.5 and 92.8 mph which i was pleased with as you say im running a 2.95 diff on 13's and just running 12 psi which is about 145 bhp at the flywheel at 20 deg inlet temp but my temp was about 40 deg so that nocks a few ponies off.but this year my clutch was ok.

i think on the the clutch slip saga i recon you have to pay off between some slipping to get away with out over cooking it as this will make it slip like a pig if she gets to hot.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas
