my mk1 metro radiator! yep its a sereck marston type, not exactley what i wanted but it was cheap & should do the job ok! its a NOS one too & never seen dirty water or fluids of any type does'nt leak after washing the dust out of it & looks ok too

dont really know what goes in here on it

my clutch casings so far, i've gone over the outside with the wire brush mounted to a drill & degreased the inside, cant seem to get it cleaner inside the frying pan bit which is a bit annoying :/

outside of the pan

the inner casing the primery seal has come up better inside though, degreased & gone over the outside with the brush in the drill

bearing side

gearbox leak fix thingy-me-bob & "the" compatition diff pin which may become redundent

gonna get my metro turbo carb & mg metro manifold out this weekend & give them a clean up too! i have a turbo manifold but i'll decide when it comes to fitting the mto the motor which fits best or is least greaf to modify

i'll have to get a turbo carb rebuild kit too! i'm getting there chaps & not getting put off a turbo mini yet! *happy*

well i've been painting bits for my engine, quite happy with the finish i'm getting, i'm using hammerite smoothrite in dark green to match the engine

oil filter housing

thermostat housing which i think will become redundant due to me needing the type that has a water feed/return for the expansion tank duuuuurrrr.....looks good though

the oil pipe that goes on the block & the vacume advance dooobreee-thingy!

oh yeah! i got the best boost gauge ever in the post! i'm just testing it works as it should i.e: when it says 10psi its reading 10psi, i'm gonna strip it to bits & clean up the inards & lube where needed! proper cool, none of this racer-x stuff this is proper race kit! ooooobbbbbbbeer nice & cost only a fiver!

only a small update 2night, i've shimmed my belt drive pulleys ready to fit the belt drive timing case, i was going to fit it but i have the wonky timing gasket not the egg shaped one! hmmmm & i was at minits today too! i knew i shouls have done this yesterday! arrh not to worry! i'll get a gasket 2moz then get the basic timing done as i have the non vernier type, i figure once hi have basic timing i can check when i'm getting full lift & decide if i need an offset woodruff key, i'll do a couple of pics of my exercise, gonna take my time at it & if it takes me till sunday to be confident i have the cam timed in right then thats cool with me!

any advice or links to doing my timing with my dti plz pop them up, i have a few guides to hand so should be ok!

then the head can go on! the real fun of the gearbox strip & build will start then, woo hoo!

right chaps, i gont the correct gasket! the belt drive cast inner cover is on & i'm 99% sure i have the basic non-vernier style timing in the correct position, piston @ TDC, crank woodruff key @ 12o clock & cam @2o clock! the marks on the pulleys are matched aswell so thats basic timing correct i think!

i'm 99% sure its right so plz check my pics & comment, when looking at the bog cam pulley the marks on it are denoted by a large & small dot & you can just make out the notch in the crank pulley, thanks lads!

i'll check it with the fti next to see if i'll need a offset key to make it a little more accuate!

need new timing cover bolts too, any recommendations where i can get some as i dont know the sizes! stainless would be nice

thanks chaps

right then chaps, i've managed to time my cam in!!! hi-5!!!!

on the advice of will & ben 998turbo minmen *happy* & checking the kent cams site the recommended timing figure is 110degrees ATDC, i was previously advised by anther that i should aim for betweeen 106-107.5, i was reading mine at 109 degrees so i was going to use an offset cam key to correct it, but then today i've checked it over again a few more times confirming TDC & full lift on number 1 inlet & i got a reading of 109.5 so i've decided with the yellow book & advice from those more experiance than me to see how i go at 109.5 :) s some pcs of the progress-ish today

belt drive buttoned up & timed, i just have to torque the cam-nut up

295 head on *happy* i know its a differant green to my engine but i plan to paint it to match

new cam followers & pushrods, standard stuff

only prob i have are the rockers not sitting down onto the head :/

i forgot to do a pic but i've used a ball & spring for my oil pressure relief valve rather than the bullet that came out!

gearbox to recon nxt, nearly there! pheeeewww then the real probs start i bet lol *happy*

well the motor is buttoned up, i'll do so more checks before i put the gearbox & clutch setup/housings on but basicly i'm onto the gearbox strip & recondition now! hi-5!

popped my waterpump on, its a hi-capacity item from minits, with the proper impeller, not the wanky steel type!

also i've put my locked dizzy on but i've forgot to get points & a cap & new rotor arm durrrrrh, this wont be on the motor for long though due to megajolt waitiing in the wings *happy*

the gearbox i'm gonna recondition & fit a cross-pin diff! plus a few other mods!

also got these lil puppys from a fellow turbo member, real Minifin Superfins *happy* they need a good tidy up but its the upgrade my rear drums need

more than likely i'll lightley shot/sand blast these & just laquer them! i'll decide on colout at the time!

well chaps no update for ages cause basicly ihave no internet access :( blummin aol, so atpresent cant update with pics of whati've been doing but here's a lil list:

polycarbonate glass nearly in all round except the front screen

cut the parcel shelf out & replaced it with alloy sheet & sorted the only rust on the car, a 6" * 3" (measured by my little member haha) strengthend some areas & cut the cant rail & the metal that holds the rear trim cards in, cut the rear seatbelt mounts away too

got spare doors & fitted grp/fibreglass skins which will have polcarbonate windows & all but the opening mechanism removed, they are light as

admittedly the car is a mix of redoxide primer & targa red but shabby chic is sortof in *surprised*/ i have a paint scheme in mind for late summer i hope if funds allow *surprised*D

so i'm gonna try to sort a dash, seats & get the new motor n box in & get her up n running

as soon as i have net access again i'll get a few pics up

i want the rain & cold to stop too, it halts progress for me *surprised*(

speaksoon all, love n kiss's haha!

right chaps! progress is slow & steady,

slow n steady wins the race according to wogans wogan! lol

i've got my engine & box done so just sorting my clutch housings/clutch & some pics

also been a bit busy on the cars bodywork, i'm changing the colour! still red (in a way) i've cut more non-structual metal off & sorted a super light headlining, ie stonechip paint *surprised*D after doing this i relised i can take some more metal from the cant rails front & rear so that'll go :)
made a little strengthening bar for the rear subframe mounts to stiffen it a bit! got loads of little job i wanna finish before the engine go's in!

why i've decided to paint itis beyond me!!! i'm fckin nuts!

oh yeah gonna cut my rear arches in the style of jimbo's article, only cause i have the metal & welder out really! its a job done & probobly overkill on my car but bugger it! its clearance!

still struggling to get the pics frm phone to pc but i'll get there!

have no clue what to do with my dash????????????? i'm looking for cheap n chearfull or a 2nd hand centre binicle setup & the wiring conversion loom from autosparks
i gotta get metal tubing to make doorbars & a dashbar too!

good thing is i can lift the car at the back so its defo getting lighter, comedy pic to follow of umper lumper sized me lifting my car lol *tongue*

i have 7" wide rims to blast & clean too! arrrrrrhhhhhh i'm getting there!

oh yep! another thing, i've cut the very very very heavy parcel shelf out & replaced it with an ally sheet bonded & riveted in! the weight differance must be oooooohhh fooook-all *surprised*P

&........ the front & rear screen seals are being buggers too! i'm on my 3rd one cause they all seem to be 12" to big, pissin me off a bit these are! i want my poly windows in!

Your dong really well, I am starting building a similar car to yours, going for downton style, Mk1 like Danel Richmonds, Mk1 in the Hertitage Centre at Gaydon.

What do you think to running 3.5" rims with 145/10 dunlop sp tyres. Or I was thinking of getting some 4.5x10 Cooper S style alloys form Mini Sport. Do you think 3.5 will struggle for grip with turbo?
Want my 1981HL really retro. Like yours.

Will get there cant wait till that first time on the strip, seems along time off!

Your well a head of me. Got to get my mini on a diet soon. At B M Fair on the MWS stand they had some Cobra Cub style buckets only £80 pair.

Keep up the work, how noisy is your mini now you have ripped every thing out, I do 40 mile a day in mine.?

mine is my daily driver too *surprised*D it is noisy but i'm a bit strange, i honestly dont mind, i have'nt got a stereo in it but it could be heard ok if i had one i reckon

if your going the turbo route try to get the proper steel reverse rims, if your carfull they can be picked up cheap!!!! the alloy ones upset the handling plus the steel ones are defo lighter!!!

me personally i think it would be quite good fun with the 145's on 3.5" rims lol
it would proboly struggle alot though, depends on the right switch, sorry right foot lol

love the downton style minis

if you have the 81 hl do they have them funky stripes down the side, keep them if you do! or get some on it, streetracer 80's style nice & low jobs a gud-un

i tend to make weekends some weekends free then do a blitz of work on it when i feel really motivated!

arrrh yeah the cub seats are pretty nice, £80 is reasonable too! i never see bargains at the show, i get a lil exciteable *surprised*D

.........& youve reminded me of another update!!!

i have a new drivers seat!!!! not as oldschool retro as i wanted but its a SPARCO highback bucket, light as anything & i got it for £15, yes thats right £15 at another car show, it was filthy!!!! looked a real mess but had no tears, just the cover needed gluing in some places, round the harness holes etc, i'm not sure if its grp or carbon kevlar but it only weighs 2.1lbs on my scales, thats the same as a bag of sugar is'nt it!

rather than buying proper frames i've chopped up the old mini seat frame so i'll bolt it to that! *surprised*P proper cheap i am! i'll drill holes in the frame to lighten it in the fashon of carl super quick austin

i know ill have it mounted nicely from the standard frame, make life easier!

all i can say about 40mile a day is be really sad & waxoyl your car 3 times a year after jetwashing it on axel stands, get it in all the box sections, if the shell is good the rest is easy & cheaper to fix

may have some straight cut drop gears too but waiting for a phonecall to see if theres some available for my 998 *surprised*D looking promising!

i also bought a 1098 engine on ebay, stripped it & it has beenreconditioned already to my suprise so i'll just fit new bearings & piston rings & recondition the gearbox, keep it as a spare!

bar-steward! i've been doing this mini & found the sills although they looked "mint" are absolute pants!
i welded my 3mm plate for the rollcage & the sills almost fell off, but......i had some rover sills in the garage so i'm putting them on this week, alls gone ok so far (i'll get a few pics) inner sills needed a couple of patches but nowt serious, pheeeeewwwww!

made my lightweight doors too! steel frames cut & lightened with polycarb windows non-opening arrrrrhhhh grp doorskins i think they are about half the weight of a normal door *surprised*D
pics below-ish:

getting the screen in is proving a fuccccckkkkkeeeerrrr! 3 times & i still cant get it in!

(sounds familier not.....!!!! hehehe)

polycarb windows & normal rubbers are'nt that easy either so its all cutting welding grinding & complant from my neighbors at the mo
