I will be the one to say it.

If Uncle Ray is that good, how did he manage to let this happen?

Yes it might not have been set up right before the dyno session, but that is why you are at the dyno session, to get the engine set up in a controlled environment so you can prevent this from happening.

My mapper uses det cans, and wideband lambda with data logging, plus there is wideband in the car and watches the temp gauges like a hawk

Perhaps its the return of those suspicious Mega pistons that is the main cause. I remain skeptical.

Still a bit of a shitter, that i can sympathise with*oh well*

Sorry to see the pistons mate. get some better ones soon.
That's a very good point sprocket, just my thoughts on it though, if Ray was tuning the car and it all looked ok, IE no det and fueling ok ect, if on a power run at say 5000 + rpms, if the piston was to break this would make it probably det, but would it be detectable in time? as it's take frations of a second to break and happend at these revs.

First mini turbo to get in the 12's & site perv

Herefordshire

This was a second hand but supposedly good engine that shane had bought from someone off here

The damage was done already by the time shane had it and he was trying to solve the smoking issue BEFORE the rolling road session.

I wouldnt say this is anything to do with the rolling road operator, more to do with a dishonest member (or someone that just didnt know how much of a damaged engine they were selling)

no point speculating too much, im sure everyone here knows how many variables are involved. For example, say the ringlands cracked on running in, either through det, striking the wear ridge on the bore, piston quality, the resulting blowby under power would erode the side of the piston pretty quickly wihtout a trace of audiable det. perhaps it did det briefly on the rollers and crack the ringlands causein the failure, but a little det while optimising timing isnt unheard of, and provided it isnt let to run wild it doesnt cause any harm, but in this case that little det could have caused a failure. at any rate, its all speculation. The damage is done and im sure a solution and preventative measures will be put in place. its gutting, but it happens.

EDIT if what nic says is true iv hilighted the appropriarte section. and its worth adding, i have seen MANY engines wiht cracked ring lands, give good compression tests and run healthy!! but it shows up on a leakdown test, and a few weeks of hard use result in a healthy appetite for oil as the piston gets eroded!

As others have said the damage is from detonation - probably due to running lean.

It could also be the reason the piston crack - its unlikely a cracked ring land caused det IMO.

a LIL fishing village on the coast - Newcastle Upon Tyne

I would go accralites and be done with it matey, hard luck, i have been there but catastrophic failures on the rollers, end caps letting go at 6500rpm £1000's later and you start again.

as per JF's advice bare minimum i would rebuild and inspect the head, check your CR etc etc and if work needs doing get the head machined up by Benross.

hard lines mate, but it does and will continue to happen to any engine builder that wants alot more out of what the engine was designed for.

keep the faith pilgrim

I agree with Dennis, there is no point speculating too much, hes correct in there are so many variables and the damage is done, just got to chalk it upto experience and start again. I have every confidence in uncle Ray, and wont think twice about taking the car back to him, those on here who have met and used Ray will know why.
I am thinking while it is in bits get the crank polished, seems like faulse economy not to (that and my spate of piss poor luck) if the block is saveable will throw in a set of omegas in, would go accrolite but funds wont allow at present.
Joe, I hadnt actually thought of it to be honest, but I have to confess its not a job Im prepared to attempt myself.
Cheers

Cheers Jason, have the machiening for the block covered, need to look into crank work locally, the chap who is checking block for me will measure & check crank but is unable to polish it.
Its a pentience game at the moment, the guy is renowned for his work but wont do anything in a hurry.

Right then, its update time!
After two attempts at getiing the block honed I finally got it back on tues, the first time I got it back the chap that had done it for me had only honed no3, my own fault realy as I should of been more clear.
Progress has been good this week.
The block has been cleaned down, oil galeries flushed and cleared.
Pistons fitted to rods.
Crank back in the block.
Pistons and rods are all in.
Followers in
Cam is in, but it has a tight spot when turning, the bearing need easing slightly.
All gear box gaskets and seals have been replaced, and the remnants of what I believe to be the p[iston have been removed from the box.
But still have a long way to go, but at least its progress.

finally which brand of pistons did you buy,
I have used a set of + 40 mega pistons,
they have been raced , reved and took some boost. they're still alive as new today, and I keep them religiously as they have been machined to 15cc.
What's sure is that they never seen det.
Whatever brand you use det will ruin a set of pistons in no time! tuning is piston longevity

Well, to be fair I really put the emphasis on seeing iof no 3 bore was savable after the piston material was deposited on it, I should of been a bit clearer. Im not going to complain tho, £20 to hone a block fit rods, and measure and check journals etc.
