Made a bit more progress but nothing very exciting,

The loom that came with my car was described as slightly modified, just a bit of an understatement:

Once the loom was sorted I knocked up an engine simulator (thanks to Joe for the loan of the trigger wheel) to test every thing was working & to try and get the ECU talking to the Laptop & Tacho:

And before anyone comments yes my scope is as old as I am & the lathe is even older.

Hopefully I'll be able to get the rest of the sensors connected up on saturday, although I'll have to raid the local scrappy first.

Progress has been a bit slow with MITP & helping my mate with his mini but I've managed to make up a bracket for the TPS & an adapter to connect it to the throttle spindle. Not very exciting I know but you don't see many so I thought I'd post a piccy.

Before anyone comments that's not a turbo carb, it's a clapped out old HIF38, hopefully I'll make a start on modifying the turbo carb tomorrow.

After two months of waiting my valves finally arrived today, although I think I may be cutting things a bit fine when it comes to clearances:

Rob I think you may have a problem whit those Valves Although to a point the bigger the valve the better there comes a time when very large valves create a massive loss in flow due to valve shrouding, on some of my recent flow bench testing we found that making the exhaust valve 1.5mm smaller we increased over all exhaust flow by 6% just some thing to think about.

by the way great work on this going to be mucking super when finished.

These are for a 12G295 I presume?

If so then the combustion chamber overlaps the bore by a fair amount.

The maximum valves that I would use are 33/27 but these look like 35/29.

At last someone else understands airflow! - valve shrouding by the cylinder wall hinders flow potential hugely especially n/a. One of the reasons the ickle 16v K head performs so well compared to alternatives - compact chambers with the valves well inside the cylinder walls on a min. This is also one of the foremost reasons the Honda VTEC engines produce such good output for engine size. The 2ZZ Toyota engine (190bhp 1.8l) used the VTEC 1.8 as the benchmark for specific output. The dig a cracking job and rightly so put the biggest valves they could get in the cylinder - the slight mistake being that the valves just overhang the block, requiring small pockets for clearance in the bores. The result is a lovely engine but head flow in stock form is very nearly all you can get no matter how good your port work is. The same efforts on a VTEC head yield well over 300cfm quite easily!

In essence bigger isn't always best!

Whoops, I've contradicted myself again:

http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php?p=vt&tid=138402

I'm using 29mm exhausts.

I use 33 and 29.5 on a 998 with a 940 head.

I tried larger (I didn't want to but the head guy didn't listen) with poor results.

rob, are you still using the metro exhaust manifold or you gonna use mirage ones?

I will admit even I was a bit surprised by the size of the valves (must check that I've got the correct sizes) but I trust the chap that's doing my head for me.

As for the exhaust manifold I'm going for a cast metty one matched to the head and modded for a GT17. If you have a look at Gav's build it appears that you can't use the GT17 with the Mirage manifolds. When I get my Mirage manifolds back they will be going on the BOC.

Progress has been a bit slow as I've been doing a lot of work on my mates Maguire recently but I have managed to drill a few holes:

Been faffing with the shell today, not much to report as I didn't get to make any little pimpy bits but I did add some extra gussets and double skinned a few bits, sadly the camera does not flatter my welding.

Note, I've got a lot more planned when it comes to the lower subframe mounts.

My tube notcher arrived from the US the other day so after spending the morning in a Radical, I thought I'd have a go at making a couple of test pieces:

Not the neatest welding, but it's solid & from looking inside the tubes I got good penetration.

It worked out at about £50 including postage from the US, but the way the pound is to the dollar at the moment you're probably better off getting one from Moss.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/0-to-45-PIP...%3A1|240%3A1318

It took a while to figure out how to use it at the dummy that had assembled it had put it together round, so I had to strip & rebuild it first.

Well mocking it up on a HIF38 was a stupid idea, turns out that the HIF38 & the HIF44 castings have loads of subtle differences and I've had to rework the blooming thing, still at least I'm getting back into the workshop.
