I have welded lots of aluminium with my TIG. I'm sure it would be helpful but I've managed fine without. Just needs a bit of thought as to how to go about the job in hand.

It certainly makes life easier with a pedal, especially on the thinner stuff. Aluminium takes a fair amount of current to get it to pool initially then after that your probably only using about 60-70% of the starting current. It can be worked around by pre heating the work or running the torch across the part to be welded with the balance turned to max clean to heat it up evenly.
