I think I'm with you on this one Turbo Phil....
My friend has a highly tuned (so much so in fact, it runs like a complete arse below 3,500 revs) subaru impreza just running short of 400 bhp....so the 30% rule implies he would be losing 120bhp through the wheels, tramsmission!!!!!!!! Yes I know its not the same as a mini, but it does highlight the inaccuracy of the maths.
Imagine ...lets say for arguments sake, a race tuned TVR, Dodge Viper etc... with 1000bhp......losing 300bhp through the wheels?!

There was an article in one of the mini mags by Keith Calver about this subject. He was of the same opinion as Phil, however he did state that power loss did increase as flywheel power increased....not sure how he worked out the formula. Anyone else read this article?....it may shed some more light on the matter.

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

AS we've said though the flywheel figure is approx and was going on Mike's experience of the rollers. It does give a figure of what some people were expecting of they're cars, two roughly std metro turbo's - 95ish bhp, my std mg metro engine - 72bhp, giallofly was expecting 160ish and he got 163 so all in all seems pretty reasonable figures.
Losses as a percentage on relaitvely low BHP's are easy enough and the error remains small, as people said though on a 1000bhp car the error would be quite large *smiley* end of the day the wheel figures are accurate and can be compared across the cars that were there on the day :)

the 30% rule is, as a few people have pointed out, basically a load of rubbish. It sort of works for cars wit 100 to 150 ish BHP, but it's still only a rule of thumb.

A propper rolling road will have the ability to measure the transmission losses before any power measurements are taken. This is done by running the car upto maximum revs and then letting it slow down. This wasn't done on Friday I don't think so the power at the wheels is the only figure that means any thing to me.

And I'm still not clear what exactly I got.

what ever the losses thought the gearbox were i was still the slowest car there anyway i think, unless i was losing 90% of power through my gearbox *tongue*

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.
