My old car had a habit of cracking the centre web ( later 3 bolt type )

i thought the later A+ boxes were the 2 bolt type because rover noticed the problem on the metty turbos and stopped putting the extra bolt in?

from what i remember them saying on the mini builder dvd.. not sure how accurate my memory is though.

Rover musnt have know too much, as they fitted crap bearings to the boxes.
Nearly every factory built box I took apart, had failed bearings.

Forgotten more than most ever know

Stevie, glad to hear that you are bored with the Granny and thinking about upgrading your Mini *smiley*

Couple of comments: the gearbox casings are very rough indeed, anyone that has had a look inside Jap boxes know what I mean. It is always a good idea to smooth the surfaces but with Mini casings it means grinding very deep at various locations. I have not bothered with my boxes yet. It is also quite complicated to gain access to all locations. The Rover block I bought from Stevie was actually ground smooth but it took me a couple of nights in the garage.

As for bearings, Rover did a major downgrading, the pre A+ used to have brass casing keeping the balls in place whereas later had plastic. Not surprising these usually fail. The last box I rebuilt for a Mini racer had a mainshaft bearing that had a cracked outer race.

All I recall, is theat the crap bearings had 10 balls, and the good ones 11....

The 11 balls had a white nylon cage I think ??? and were the preferred ones that didnt give bother.
