Hi Matt - no not hard - the hard bit was building the engine/gbox and the car itself in about 11 weeks flat - at evenings and weekends only!

- nice little collection you have going there!

cheers

John

If Carling made Mini engines
it would probably be like this one!

yeah, to build a good mini takes a while but you`ve done well for the time

& the "collection" is needed as i`m pretty sure that i`ll be selling my fitting kits soon so i`ll be needing to have heads avaliable to my customers as well hey?

sounds like a plan - have you strapped a turbo on the runner yet?

well, we did,,, but the old computer wouldn`t play the game very well at all,,, it made noises , just not very good ones *smiley* & just after i ripped the donk out to duplicate all the plates, fanges & pulley bosses etc, the new computer lands at my door, so now i`m waiting (impatiently) for all the bits to be programed into the CNC program thing-a-me-jig so i can get my originals back to stuff it all back together with the hair dryer on it.

we`re not far away, the big problem i`m having is that the 8v kit bits are slightly different to the 16v kit bits, so we`re perfecting all the differences between & dummy-ing them all up to make sure they`re all sweet before we jump the gun & stuff all my bits back onto my donk.

& besides, i`m spending most of my time on the R1 Yammy powered buggy thing atm *smiley*

What differences have you found? I was under the impresion that for conversion pieces they are the same ......

Would be great to know what to look out for.

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

there was a figure for jimsters in a mag, just over 200 nana's on emaralds rollers but there was an issue with something that was limiting power, i think it was the wastegate cracking open.

Yep. Wastegate issues with the T25 on there not bypassing enough, and boost creeping up with rpm (limited to 6400 I recall).

Basically - unmappable over 5000rpm.

If we'd havew stuck a nice big T3 on there - with their dustbin sized flapper valve we wouldn't have had a problem!!!

That's pretty much what I mean, would just love to know what it would have been capable of without the turbo trouble on the dyno and when it's all fully sorted.

Jim is keeping his cam profiles, timing and turbo specs to himself IIRC - I dare say he'll post up some dyno stuff - but the drag strip is where the results will really be seen *wink*

ok, essentially the 8v & 16v bimmer heads are much the same in overall dimentions & the bolt patterens , pulley bosses etc dept, the differences (apart from only being 8 valves in one of them & 16 on the other & the 2 different cam shafts to suit etc) is that the lower & upper alloy flange conversion pieces that help seal up the front head plate are different... the lower section of the front of the cyl head is a slightly different shape where our sealing flange fits & also the cam covers are a different shape where that upper flange sealing bit fits.

also One front head plate "can" be used for both types but we`re looking at making 2 types of those as well & making them & selling them all as an exchange cyl head type kit because we dowel the plate to the head to make sure the cams line up with the holes for the front seals correctly.

we are also looking at making the front plates have an "O-Ring" seal to the head, it`s just makes a much neater job, & less chance of a leak than just gasket goo... but there`s not much meat along ther front of the head where the plate bolts up,,,so we`re deliberating on the o-ring thing at the moment.

otherwise we`d have to sell a "semi-finished" kit & the purchaser would have to to a lot of the final touches, fitting, grub screws, aligning , doweling & devcon/sealing of these 2 small flange pieces & front head plates themselves.

I know it doesn`t sound like much but it`s just a matter of professionalism/quality... there`s also an issue where we were going to make 2 alloy "dummy" stubs to fit into the cam tunnels so that people could line the front plate up for the cam seals & dowel the front plate themselves but that leaves room for error, so again an exchange head with all that allready done is a far better propersition

There are other reasons why we`re not all finished with all this yet, but that mainly comes back to the fact that christmas holidays are more important to my machinist than my bimmer fitting kits *smiley*

I don`t balme him tho,,, that`s why i`ve got onto the R1 yammy buggy thing while he`s still off work,,, he`s back next week so i`ll hound & hound him to get them all done then *smiley*

In the mean time, just for anyone curious enough, there`s a mob in the states (RB Racing i think from memory) who specialise on the Bimmer K series bikes & do turbo land speed rocket ships (that`s where Morespeed got their aclaimed/alleged dyno figures from) & they claim over 300hp in 1200cc form, so there really is some good potential for these conversions, just have to nail it all properly in the build & pump it up *smiley*

I`ve also been looking at the "poverty Pack" 998/1098 --> * valve version & making some headway with it & looking at making a single side mounted , log type inlet manifold so people can get their main conversion done & just bung on a carb, extractors & dizzy just to get them going easy & cheap,,,that way they can play with the idea of injection/turbo etc at a later date... at least it gives people a chance at getting the whole thing started & running without throwing huge chucks of cash at it in one hit.

IIRC Jimbo ended up using the 'dowels' in the cam journals - just as you describe - to locate the front plate before doweling it to the head...

Worked well clearly!
