That's why I tell you to use the ones with a 3/8" head. Then you can just use this:

You use an 8mm spanner on a 3/8" head bolt? Rough bastard!

No, that was just for clearification. Some of you need that...

"clearification"?

Do you mean "clarification"? As in "to clarify"?

The bigger bolts do work OK on race engines, they will keep a high HP engine from squirming around and leaking oil. I don't use them. I use 1/4-28 allen heads everywhere except the two studs on the back of the block. But I stole an old-time idea, I use a spring center punch to make a zillion little punch marks on the top flanges (the gasket mating surfaces) of the transmission. These little pock marks lock the paper gasket in place. I use no glue or sealant except a small dab of Permatex form-a-gasket at the ends of the front main seal.

Bit late, but I recently purchased the ARP kit from aptfast.com.

How about this for an easy solution:

Throw away the 'putty steel' 1/4" UNF bolts that rover fitted and get some Cap heads (that's allen key bolts) instead... Easy to fit with one of these 'ball ended' allen keys and easilly stronger (as they are usually 12,9 grade equivalent) than a 5/16" low grade bolt.
Also saves drilling and tapping the block, and reducing the material thickness round the holes on the aluminium gearbox casing...

Nice one Dave, you beat me to it. Already done it on mine.

It's not the age that makes me creak it's the mileage

The engine I have just sold had cap heads for the flywheel housing and gearbox casing, all I can say is never again! Trying to remove the flywheel cover is a complete nightmare in position with cap heads! It's trustworthy bolts for me from now on!

I got pissed off just putting the front of my gearbox on with them!

Look smart though!
